How Kathy Woods Made Room In Fashion For Herself And Other Little People
Kathy Woods fell in love with fashion at a young age. In sixth grade she was in a fashion show, and she decided then and there that she wanted to be a runway
model.
When Woods told her mom the news, “She started laughing, and she said to me, ‘Girl, models start everywhere from 5'7” on up.’”
Woods is not 5’7”, she’s a little person. But soon her mom gave in and took her to a modeling agency. “I remember the lady looking me in the face and she
had this little smirk, and she said, “I appreciate you being ambitious, but
there's no place for little people on the runway.”
In that moment, Woods refused to back down. “I remember that day and I told her, ‘Someday.’”
As she grew up, she remained interested in fashion but found it increasingly difficult to find clothes that fit and that she liked. So in 2010, Woods decided
that she wanted to create her own clothing line-- designed specifically for
women of short stature.
“I am the first African-American to create a line for little people,” she said. “It had never been done.”
Four years later, she officially launched the Kathy D. Woods Collection. “When we first launched, I actually cried, because it was always a dream of
mine.” Woods said.
Woods said her customers were grateful to see clothes that were affordable, trendy and designed with them in mind. She makes sure that all of her clothes
have stretch so they’re comfortable and versatile.
“Little people come in all shapes and sizes,” Woods said. “It’s all about meeting that need.”
