SIX people were killed and more than 40 injured when a bus overturned near Shanghai’s Donghai Bridge yesterday morning.
The accident happened at 10:08am on Donghai Avenue near Nengyuan Road. Six passengers were pronounced dead on scene, and around 10 were seriously injured.
It is not known how many men or women were among the dead and injured but it is understood that there were no children on the vehicle.
It had set off from Nanpu Bus Station with a total of 49 people onboard, including the driver, and was making its way to Shengsi County in neighboring
Zhejiang Province.
Most of the passengers on the bus were tourists or Shengsi residents.
The driver, surnamed Zhao, who is being treated in Shanghai Huashan Hospital, told police that the bus had come into contact with a barrier at the side of the
road, causing him to lose control.
The bus then shot across the road and hit another barrier before crossing the carriageway again and crashing into a lamp post and flipping over on to its
side.
Zhao, 41, was thrown out of the bus through the front windshield and suffered fractures in his lower back as well as multiple bruises.
Of the passengers who died, four were crushed under the bus, while another two had been thrown out of the vehicle on impact.
Some of the injured passengers were trapped in the bus and had to be helped out while others managed to escape through a hatch on the roof.
One of the injured passengers told Shanghai Television that most of the people on the bus were not wearing seat belts.
Road conditions were good and she couldn’t remember seeing any obstacle in front of the bus before the accident.
The bus had come to rest beside a grassy area at the side of the road and a witness told STV that its front section had been severely damaged and the door
torn off.
One of the rear wheels was also seen to be missing, the witness said, and the vehicle was leaking oil on the roadway.
Three police helicopters were sent to the scene and ferried four seriously injured victims, including the driver, to Shanghai Huashan Hospital and Shanghai
Ruijin Hospital.
Other injured passengers, mostly with bone fractures and other injuries, were sent to Pudong Hospital and Shanghai No. 6 People’s Hospital’s Lingang branch.
All the injured were said to be in a stable condition last night.
