LOS ANGELES (AP) — It had not been the smoothest of seasons for the Dodgers‘ Justin Turner. First he started six weeks late because of a
broken wrist. When he returned
Brad Ziegler Jersey , his power seemed wanting. Then he strained a groin and was out another 10 days.Only with the arrival of August, Turner has returned
to his All-Star form, and it was clearly on display Sunday when he drove in five
runs to lead Los Angeles to a 7-3 victory and three-game sweep of the San Diego
Padres.Turner is hitting .405 in August with five home runs, 19 RBI, 19 runs and
10 doubles.“J.T. had a huge day,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.“This is the
Justin we’ve seen the last three or four years.”Manny Machado added a two-run
homer that put the Dodgers ahead and gave them their seventh sweep of the
season. The Padres lost their fifth consecutive game and dropped to 27-40 on the
road, despite taking an early 2-0 lead against Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-1).“They hit
better than us, they played better defense and they pitched better,” said Padres
first baseman Eric Hosmer. “They outplayed us. Sometimes that’s baseball, but we
have to find the identity of our team. Losing three games this weekend is not
where we wanted to be.”The Padres gave left-hander Robbie Erlin (3-4) the early
lead with a solo home run from Franmil Reyes in the second and Hunter Renfroe’s
RBI single in the third.Turner tied it up with a two-run double in the fifth.
Machado added his 31st home run of the season, and his seventh in 35 games with
the Dodgers. After a pair of walks and a wild pitch, Turner drove in two more in
the sixth with a single to left off reliever Robert Stock. He tied his
career-high for RBIs with a run-scoring double in the eighth. It’s the fifth
time he’s driven in five runs in one game.“I feel like I’m in a pretty good spot
right now,” Turner said. “I haven’t had any problems with the wrist. It’s going
good and I’m seeing the ball pretty well at the plate.”RYU BACKIn his third
start back since missing over three months with a torn groin
http://www.twinsfanproshop.com/authentic-rod-carew-jersey , Ryu gave up 11 hits in his 5 2/3 innings, but held the Padres to two runs.“I did
give up a lot of hits, but I was able to control the damage,” Ryu said.Said
Turner: “That’s what we’re counting on. We’re glad to have him back in there.
He’s been throwing the ball great. He’s a pitcher. He knows how to pitch. He
changes his height, changes in and out, and has command of four pitches. When
you do that, it’s pretty tough on pitchers. He’s good for us.”PADRES LOSING
WOESSan Diego fell to 50-83 on the year, 23½ games back of the Arizona
Diamondbacks.Renfroe, who added a solo homer in the ninth, said it’s been a
continually challenging season.“Baseball is a frustrating game, that’s why it’s
the hardest game in the world,” he said. “We are in a bad stretch right now but
we cannot get frustrated. You have to battle and grind it out everyday. It sucks
to lose and it sucks to have a losing season but we’re having growing
pains.”TRAINER’S ROOMPadres: As he ran from second to third base Saturday night,
3B Wil Myers was drilled on his side by a Renfroe line drive. Myers was an
automatic out
Brian Dozier Jersey , but remained in the game and started Sunday. The play likely cost the Padres a run in the eventual 5-4, 12-inning loss to the
Dodgers.Dodgers: The Dodgers are off Monday and when they resume play Tuesday at
Texas expect to have both RHP Ross Stripling (back) and OF Joc Pederson (knee)
back. Stripling is expected to join the bullpen. Pederson did pinch hit Saturday
and Sunday, but was held out of the lineup.UP NEXTPadres: After an off-day
Monday, the Padres return home with RHP Jacob Nix (1-2, 6.17) scheduled to start
against the Mariners. In his first three starts, he has a groundout percentage
of 61.0 percent.Dodgers: After their off-day, RHP Walker Buehler (6-4, 2.96) is
scheduled to start Tuesday at Texas. The rookie threw seven scoreless innings
and struck out a career-high nine in his last start against the Cardinals.
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire watched Christin Stewart
put on a show in batting practice and thought his rookie slugger might have a
big night.Gardenhire got even more than he expected.Stewart hit his first career
homer in the first inning, hit another home run in the second inning and drew a
bases-loaded walk in the seventh as the Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 11-8
on Thursday night.“The ball was flying out in BP, especially when he was hitting
them, so I had a feeling he might have a big night,” Gardenhire said. “What he
did tonight is the reason he’s considered one of our top prospects.”Stewart, a
September call-up playing in his 11th game
http://www.twinsfanproshop.com/authentic-justin-morneau-jersey , became the first Tigers rookie to drive in six runs in a game since Ryan Raburn
had seven against the Chicago White Sox on July 25, 2007.“I felt great before
the game, but there are days you have a great BP and a terrible game, so I
didn’t want to get too confident,” he said. “It was an awesome feeling,
though.”Six Tigers had at least two hits and Detroit snapped a seven-game home
losing streak.Kansas City lost its fifth straight despite hitting three doubles
and four homers.“We swung the bats well,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We just
didn’t pitch well.”The Tigers led 9-5 after two innings as the teams combined
for five home runs, six doubles, a triple and a double steal. By that point,
both starting pitchers were gone.Detroit’s Matthew Boyd allowed five runs while
getting four outs.“Gardy definitely made the right move getting me out of
there,” Boyd said. “I just didn’t have anything out there.”Kansas City’s Jorge
Lopez (2-5) gave up seven runs without getting an out in the second.“I was up
from the first pitch I threw,” he said. “The plan was to keep the ball down, but
I couldn’t make pitches.”Zac Reininger (1-0)
Kirby Puckett Jersey , the second of seven Detroit pitchers, picked up his first major-league victory.Jorge Bonifacio gave the Royals the lead with a
three-run homer off Boyd in the first, but the Tigers came back with four in the
bottom of the inning. Stewart hit a two-run homer just over the right-field
fence and Nicholas Castellanos hit the next pitch to nearly the same
spot.Grayson Greiner made it 4-3 with a sacrifice fly later in the inning, and
the runs kept coming in the second. Brian Goodwin gave the Royals a 5-4 lead
with a two-run homer in the top of the inning, but Stewart made it five RBIs in
two innings with a long three-run home run in the Tigers’ second.“I was running
to first and praying on the first one because I didn’t know if it was going to
get out,” said Stewart, who has 83 minor-league homers in the last three
seasons. “The second one, I knew it was gone.”Glenn Sparkman replaced Lopez and
gave up a triple to Castellanos and Victor Martinez’s RBI double before getting
the first out of the second inning. Greiner picked up his second RBI with a
two-out single, giving the Tigers a 9-5 lead.Hunter Dozier hit a two-run homer
off Reininger in the fourth, pulling the Royals within 9-7, but the next four
relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings as Detroit maintained the lead
into the ninth inning.“We didn’t want to use that many arms in the first game of
a four-game series, but they did the job,” Gardenhire said.Stewart walked with
the bases loaded in the seventh for his sixth RBI.Adalberto Mondesi homered off
Shane Greene in the ninth to make it 11-8.TRAINER’S ROOMTigers: INF Niko Goodrum
(quad) and 3B Jeimer Candelario (back) both took grounders before the game.
Gardenhire said Candelario could play as soon as Saturday with Goodrum possibly
returning Monday.V-MART KEEPS HIS RECORDIn the first inning
http://www.twinsfanproshop.com/authentic-byron-buxton-jersey , Victor Martinez lined a ball into the right-center field gap – the perfect place
for a triple at spacious Comerica Park – but his lack of speed turned it into a
double. With nine games left in his final season, Martinez has 3,937 plate
appearances for the Tigers without hitting a triple, the most in franchise
history. Aaron Robinson is second with 868.STEWART’S BIG DAYStewart came within
inches of an even more memorable game. In the seventh, with the bases loaded and
a 3-2 count, he lined a Brandon Maurer slider into the right-field corner for
what looked like a bases-clearing double. That would have tied Harry Heilmann and
Jim Northrup’s franchise record of eight RBIs in a game, but the ball sliced
just foul. He drew the bases-loaded walk on the next pitch.“That was a great
at-bat,” Gardenhire said. “He got a 3-2 pitch he could drive, then came right
back and had the patience to take the walk.”UP NEXTThe teams continue their
four-game series on Friday night, with Ian Kennedy (2-8, 4.73) starting against
Detroit’s Francisco Liriano (5-10, 4.54).
