CANBERRA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Australian MPs have on Friday expressed their condolences at news of the death of British Labor MP Jo Cox, who was slain on a
West Yorkshire street overnight (Australian time).
Many high-profile Australian political leaders, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, expressed their horror at the news that the 41-year-old was
gunned down and stabbed in the street, with many, including Turnbull, labeling
the murder a "hate crime".
"(I am) deeply shocked by the murder of UK MP Jo Cox. Our condolences, prayers and solidarity are with her family and the people of the UK," Turnbull
said on social media on Friday.
Cox was shot on a street in her West Yorkshire seat of Bately and Spen by a man who was said to have shouted "put Britain first" before the killing. Cox was
a well-known advocate of Britain staying in the EU, with the nation's crucial
Brexit referendum set to take place on June 23.
Opposition Leader and the head of Australia's equivalent Labor Party, Bill Shorten, also denounced the murder as a "shocking hate crime", but said it
shouldn't deter politicians from continuing their hard work in the community.
"I don't feel scared in public spaces at all," Shorten told the press, "I like people and I would not let a tiny proportion of idiot discourage us from
doing our job."
The government's Leader of the House, Christopher Pyne said the ordeal was a "tragedy beyond imagination" for such a young person to be killed in the name of
their work.
He added that it would be a shame if politicians in democracies such as in Britain and Australia felt the need to avoid public appearances and disconnect
from the community in the wake of the shooting.
"One of the great strengths of Australian and British politics is the approachability of MPs, and candidates for that matter," Pyne said after
offering his condolences.
"It would be a great tragedy if we changed that because of this sort of behavior."

ATHENS, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Two more Turkish servicemen fled to Greece a few days ago and applied for asylum, Greek national news agency AMNA reported on
Thursday.
The two officers appeared at a police station in the northern city of Orestiada on Feb. 15 submitting an asylum request, according to the report.
The new requests came as tensions in bilateral ties between Turkey and Greece have spiked in recent months following the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July
2016.
No official statement has been released by Greek authorities yet on the case.
According to AMNA, Turkish sources said the two men may have been involved in the assassination bid against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 15.
According to Greek Public Order ministry sources, Turkey has not requested their extradition so far.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, Greek officials said that Greece did not intend to become a theater of confrontation between the Turkish government and
its critics.
Eight officers had fled to the northern city of Alexandroupolis a day after the failed coup attempt and sought asylum in Greece last July, triggering a
diplomatic and judicial marathon which ended this January.
The ruling of Greece's Supreme Court against the officers' extradition to Ankara to stand trial for their alleged role in the failed coup attempt, citing
concern over possible violation of their human rights, did not receive a welcome
from Turkey.
The eight have insisted on their innocence and stressed they feared for their safety. Enditem

Luke Kuechly Jersey , June 10 (Xinhua) -- New research suggests that the
strength of a country's government plays a vital role in preventing violence at
a time when climate change is expected to lead to more violence related to food
scarcity.
"We've already started to see climate change as an issue that won't just put the coasts under water, but as something that could cause food riots in some
parts of the world," said Bear

Research and associate professor of political science at the Ohio State

Knowing that "climate-induced food scarcity is going to become an increasingly big issue," Braumoeller conducted the study, titled "Food scarcity

As extreme weather such as droughts and floods could hurt agricultural production in some countries, leading to violence there or elsewhere by people
who are desperate for food, the researchers estimated the effects of food
insecurity and state vulnerability on the occurrence of violent uprisings in
Africa for the years 1991 to
2011 Marquis

that lead to violence and to gauge the vulnerability of countries.
For the climate-related causes of food shocks, the researchers analyzed rainfall, temperature and the international prices of

"We recognized that countries that imported food could be impacted by climate shocks in other parts of the world that suddenly increased prices, even if they
weren't experiencing any significant weather impacts themselves," Braumoeller
said.
When examining countries' vulnerabilities Devin

country's dependence on agricultural production, its imports, the strength of
its political institutions and its wealth.
"We found that the most vulnerable countries are those that have weak political
