Sindh to allow five-year tax holiday for film and cinema industry
KARACHI (December 21 2004): The Sindh government, on Monday, decided in principle to allow a five-year tax holiday for the film and cinema industry to help revival of the cinema-going culture. Presiding over a high level meeting at the Governor House here on Monday, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad instructed the officials of the culture and excise departments to formulate a comprehensive strategy in this regard.
The governor also asked for steps to provide the film industry with concessions, and establishment of a 'film city' on minimum 100 acres of land. He also asked for practical steps regarding setting up of a film academy and making a provision of cinema houses in big commercial centres. He said that the rules and laws of the building control authority should be updated in this regard.
Ibad said that the provision of entertainment facilities was a must to eliminate the negative activities and crimes from the society. He asked the filmmakers to give attention towards producing entertaining films for children and youngsters.
Sindh governor stressed on checking piracy, safeguarding intellectual property rights, and 'rating' the films. He asked the officials to review all the aspects regarding the revival of cinema industry and highlight those issues for which the co-operation of the federal government was needed.
On the occasion, actress and producer Samina Pirzada and other representatives of the film industry presented their suggestions regarding the revival of the cinema industry.
Provincial Minister for Labour Adil Siddiqui, Advisor for Local Bodies Waseem Akhtar, Principal Secretary Brigadier Akhtar Zamin (Retd), Additional Chief Secretary Culture Syed Anwar Hiader, Provincial Secretary Ishaque Lashari, Provincial Secretary Information Mehtab Rashdi and other officials were also present during the meeting.
