Because cold rolling takes place below the recrystallization temperature of metals, the strength and hardness of metals increase while the plasticity decreases during cold rolling. This phenomenon is called work hardening. The result of work hardening is that the deformation resistance increases, the rolling pressure increases, the plasticity decreases, and brittle cracks easily occur. After work hardening exceeds a certain degree, the rolled piece will be too hard and brittle to continue cold rolling. Therefore, after a certain pass of cold rolling, the steel plate is often softened (recrystallization annealing, solution treatment, etc.) to make the rolled piece plastic, reduce the deformation resistance, so as to continue rolling thin.
