Leadership is the ability to influence, guide and direct others to achieve common goals. As a leader, one must have knowledge and skills in order to oversee the performance of others. Though there is a close relationship between leadership and management, there are several differences which separate leadership from management.
Firstly, leadership does not require an organizational managerial position in order to perform. Unlike managers, leaders are not dependent on hierarchy positions in an organization.
Secondly, leadership is more focused on influencing and inspiring people’s performance whereas management is mainly concentrated on executing instructions and targets so as to achieve goals.
Thirdly, management is vastly focused on performing organizational functions such as planning, controlling, controlling, coordinating and organizing.
While leadership focuses on the near future and aims at establishing means of conquering the future uniting people.
