ABUJA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria is pleased with taekwondist Uche Chukwumerije, who recently won gold at the Belgium Open International Taekwondo
Championship, a statement reaching Xinhua said on Thursday.
The statement, signed by Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo in Abuja, expressed hope that the gold medal would likely place the athlete among the top 30 in the
next international taekwondo rankings.
"To have our athletes among the top in the world rankings is laudable and brilliant, and I urge the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) to win more laurels
to encourage Nigerians to celebrate you," said the official statement which also
commended the government of South Korea for its support in encouraging the sport
in Africa's most populous country.
It added that the Nigerian federation had developed a strong youth team which would further make the country proud in taekwondo, while attributing the success
of the federation to the encouragement it gets from government of the West
African country.
"Now, this achievement will further pave way for Nigeria to be in the next Olympics," said the statement, noting Belgium Open marked the first time Nigeria
attending a major Taekwondo event in five months.

Wednesday.
All months in 2014 have been warmer, and four months were more than one degree Celsius warmer, than the 1981-2010 average, the online Scotsman newspaper
reported, quoting the analysis by the environmental group Friends of the Earth
Scotland.
Spring this year has been the warmest since records began, with a mean temperature of 7.69 degree Celsius, April was the fourth warmest ever recorded,
with a mean temperature of 7.9 degree Celsius, while June was fourth equal for
the position of warmest ever, with a mean temperature of 12.9 degree Celsius,
said the report.
February was the fifth wettest ever recorded, said the analysis of the group's meteorology Office.
"Scotland's weather is showing a very clear long-term trend of increasing temperatures, just as climate change scientists' predict." said the Group's
Director Richard Dixon.
"Climate change brings not just increasing global temperatures but increasingly unpredictable weather. Scotland is caught between the changing
influences of disappearing Arctic ice, the shifting jet stream and a weakening
Gulf Stream. The consequences for us are more extreme weather, bringing more
flooding, storms and droughts," he was quoted as saying.

2014 was the planet's warmest May ever recorded, according to the environmental
group.
