York Giants knew that they had to add talent to their defense. GM Dave Gettleman
said a number of times the team didn’t have enough defensive play makers last
season, and would have won more games during a 5-11 season if it could have made
some late-game stops.After trading away Olivier Vernon, and losing Landon
Collins, Kerry Wynn, Josh Mauro, Mario Edwards and Connor Barwin, you knew the
Giants would emphasize defense in the draft.Thus, Gettleman used the 17th
overall pick on monstrous defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and engineered a
trade up to select cornerback Deandre Baker with the 30th pick. Both should be
instant starters.Here is what Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur said about the two
defensive players.Dexter LawrenceGettleman: “We got me a hog mollie! Dexter
Lawrence, he might have been the biggest player in the draft, I don’t know. He’s
a quality run player and he’s more than just a two-down run player. This kid can
push the pocket and he can have an impact on the pass rush. That’s why we took
him at 17 and we are thrilled ... He’s versatile, he’s got hips, he can flip to
rush the passer and we are thrilled to have him.”Shurmur: “Dexter

pass rush, but he’s really good on first, second down and the run game stuff.
Tremendous human being and he’s a big guy and I think you win with big

...“Here’s what I want you to understand. This is where numbers don’t tell all
the story. Defensive tackles can affect the pass rush if they get consistent
inside push. How many times have you guys watched a game, and the ends come
screaming off the corner, and the quarterback steps up, and there’s nobody
there. You get inside pass rush, those ends come screaming off the corner,
they’re going to affect it, and if the guy is getting push, the quarterback is
going to step up and Dexter will give him a kiss.”On not getting an edge rusher
with any of the first three picks ...“Rome wasn’t built in a day. Oh and by the
way, (LB) Lorenzo Carter had 5.5 sacks last year.”Deandre BakerGettleman: “The
last guy we traded up for we feel is the best cover corner in the draft, the kid
from Georgia, Deandre Baker. We feel like we got three guys that are going to
impact this franchise for a long time.”Shurmur: “Dave did it, he got Deandre
Baker. He’s a cover corner. The thing that impressed me most on tape was how
stinking competitive he is. He’s very confident and he’s very competitive and I
think when he’s faced with a challenge of a good wide out, he’s going to accept

Stier-USA TODAY SportsThe New York Giants hold their first OTA on Monday
morning, and media has access to practice and a select handful of players.Here
are five storylines to follow during the OTAs.Daniel Jones and Eli ManningCoach
Pat Shurmur said Manning had “no reaction” when he was told the Giants were
drafting Jones. You know, though, that he had one. Good, bad, indifferent, he
had one.If he is made available to media on Monday, Manning will be asked a
plethora of questions about Jones. His reaction to the selection, how he sees
his role, the idea of being a mentor, is it uncomfortable knowing Jones was
drafted to succeed him, how the two are getting along. Most likely, he will
answer all of the questions without making any waves.That, simply, is
Manning.The two will also be closely watched during practice. How do they
interact? Does Jones ask questions? Does Manning offer help?Guaranteed, we will
all be tired of the Manning-Jones topic soon enough.Offensive line alignmentWhen
the Giants signed Mike Remmers you figured that there were
Darius Slayton Jersey Boys , perhaps, two competitions for starting spots on the offensive line. Right tackle, where Remmers would appear to be a prohibitive
favorite over Chad Wheeler. Center, where Jon Halapio will probably get the job
over Spencer Pulley.What, though, will the absence of left tackle Nate Solder
(ankle surgery) for spring practices do? The guess here is Wheeler aligns at
left tackle and preps to be the Giants’ swing tackle, backing up both Solder and
Remmers. If it’s not Wheeler, I honestly have no idea. I don’t see a better left
tackle option on the current roster.How are the puppies coming along?Referring
to all of the young cornerbacks on the roster, Giants GM Dave Gettleman said at
the draft that veteran Janoris Jenkins has some “puppies to train.”We get our
first look at those puppies lined up against veteran wide receivers on
Monday.There will be a couple of things to watch. How they do, of course. Also,
how they are aligned. Will DeAndre Baker work with the first team? Julian Love?
Will we see Corey Ballentine practice? What will Sam Beal look like?Will any
UDFAs step forwardEvery tear a few undrafted free agents shine in the spring.
Some go on to make the roster and become key contributors. Most fade into
oblivion after a brief moment in the sun.Which UDFAs will emerge this year?
There are certainly some interesting ones on the roster. Defensive end Jake
Ceresna, out of the CFL. Long-snapper/linebacker Jack Carlock from DIII LIU
Post. Guard Austin Droogsma, who never played college football. Punter Ryan
Anderson. Monmouth wide receiver Reggie White Jr. Kentucky tight end C.J.
Conrad. Eric Dungey, the former Syracuse quarterback being looked at for a
quarterback/tight end role. Who will emerge? Which undrafted guys make the
roster? We start to get some clues about that on Monday.The passing attackOne
practice in May isn’t going to give us an answer, but the question is how that
part of the offense will develop with Odell Beckham Jr. now an ex-Giant. We get
our first glimpse Monday morning.
