BrownTwitterFacebookRedditPocketFlipboardEmailWhen the San Francisco 49ers
signed Jonathan Brown,it was seen as an obvious camp body. Robbie Gould will be
back and this no-name kicker that played for Louisville will be out before Week
1. Well, that’s not so much the case anymore. Brown is still a long-shot to make
the roster. There are better names available in free agency and Brown doesn’t
have a single stat to his name. With Gould’s status in question, Brown at least
now has an opportunity, no matter how small that may be. Basic Info:Age:
26Experience: 0 seasonsHeight: 5’ 10Weight 194 lbsCap Status:He signed a
two-year deal in March. His salary in 2019 will be $495,000What to expect in
2019:Brown is pretty raw. He hasn’t kicked a single field goal in the regular
season and it’s a bit scary to think he could helm place kicking if this Gould
situation isn’t resolved. A former soccer player (here come the Ray Finkle
jokes), Brown went to football in 2014. So he was playing football for five or
so years? The 49ers will need to bring in a veteran, any veteran, for Brown to
compete against. If his last couple years in training camps have got him
anywhere, he can rip the job away in competition and be the 49ers’ new option at
kicker. The thing is, there are other more experienced options available. As far
as Brown’s kicking, I just don’t know what to say. He made all his preseason
kicks in 2018, including a 55-yard boot, but he has no regular season tape. Odds
of making the roster:It all depends on what Gould does. If Gould sits out, Brown
has a chance at getting on the roster with his cheap salary. The 49ers would be
wise to bring in a veteran to compete, but if Brown can show something, give him
the gig. Of course, if Gould reports, Brown will be out by Week 1 of the regular
season. There’s no reason to keep him around then.Final score, recap, injury
report for 49ers-Chargers 49ers-Chargers final scoreThe 49ers impressed in their
first start after losing Jimmy Garoppolo. They still struggle with tackles, but
C.J. Beathard was quite impressive in his 2018 debut. The 49ers lost 29-27, but
Beathard impressed with 298 passing yards and two touchdowns. He threw two
interceptions, but one was a drop by George Kittle, and one came after Beathard
was bum-rushed late in the game. He took some big hits and generally played
solid football in the loss.49ers driving heading into 4th quarterIt’s hard to
keep up with what has been an exciting game. The 49ers trailed 26-17, but C.J.
Beathard connected with George Kittle for an 85-yard touchdown on a catch and
run. The 49ers forced the Chargers to punt and now the 49ers have the ball at
midfield, trailing 26-24 heading into the fourth quarter.Injury updatesThe 49ers
return in the third quarter with Joe Staley and Dante Pettis both ruled out.
Erik Magnuson is in at right tackle for Mike McGlinchey who left earlier with
some kind of lower leg issue. The game is tied up 17-17 heading into the third
quarter.Joe Staley injures kneeThe 49ers lead the Chargers 17-6, but have
suffered a tough loss on the offensive line. Left tackle Joe Staley suffered a
knee injury midway through the second quarter when Derwin James got a big hit on
C.J. Beathard. Staley walked off the field and has since walked back to the
locker room. He is listed as questionable to return.49ers take 14-0 lead! The
49ers are rolling early. C.J. Beathard found Kendrick Bourne on a short slant
route for the score.49ers take 7-0 lead on pick-sixThe 49ers did not waste any
time getting on the board to take a lead on the Chargers. On the third play of
the game, Philip Rivers threw a pass intercepted by safety Antone Exum. Exum ran
the ball back 31 yards for the score. Exum is playing in place of an injured
Jaquiski Tartt.Dante Pettis knee injuryThe 49ers rookie injured his knee on a
punt return in the first quarter, and is questionable to return. He was down and
in pain, and needed help walking off the field. He went to the blue injury tent,
and was then carted to the locker room.Week 4 inactivesThe 49ers and Chargers
announced their inactives, and good news for the most part for San Francisco.
Both running backs, Matt Breida and Alfred Morris, will play. Additionally,
Antone Exum, who was downgraded to questionable on Saturday due to a quadricep
injury, is active and will start at strong safety. Richard Sherman was ruled out
on Friday, while Jaquiski Tartt had been listed as doubtful.49ers inactives: WR
Richie James, CB Richard Sherman, S Jaquiski Tartt, OG Joshua Garnett, OL Najee
Toran, DL Jullian Taylor, OT Shon ColemanChargers inactives: LB Kyzir
White Joe Montana Jersey , C Cole Toner, T Joe Barksdale, G Forrest Lamp, WR JJ Jones, DT T.Y. McGill, DE Joey BosaAdrian Colbert injury updateSafety Adrian
Colbert was listed as questionable for Week 4 with a hip injury he suffered last
week. He was a DNP on Wednesday, and limited Thursday and Friday. Based on
pre-game workouts, it would appear he is set to be active for the game.Matt
Breida, Alfred Morris injury updatesThe 49ers are expected to have both of their
starting running backs for Week 4, according to Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter.
Breida suffered a knee injury last Sunday and was limited on Wednesday and
Friday. Morris suffered a knee injury during the practice week, and was limited
on Thursday and Friday. Breida leads the NFL in yards per carry, and he and
Morris need to get yards against the Chargers to set up C.J. Beathard for
success.49ers-Chargers previewThe San Francisco 49ers are back on the road for
the second time in a row. This time the milage isn’t as bad as they head to Los
Angeles to take on the Chargers. While the short travel is nice, the 49ers have
lost Jimmy Garoppolo for the season, making C.J. Beathard the starting
quarterback going forward. This will be the first time to see if Beathard has
improved on his rookie season, and with a second year in Kyle Shanahan’s
offense, we can all cross our fingers. This will be an afternoon game kicking off
at 1:25 PM.The game will air on CBS and you can see who gets it by looking at
our broadcast map. Andrew Catalon and James Lofton will be in the booth. The
49ers were mounting a comeback against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, but no
sooner did they make a redzone trip to make things interesting, Jimmy Garoppolo
made an ill-advised cut and blew out his ACL, putting him out for the season.
The team now will lean on C.J. Beathard to get through 2018. Beathard finished
2017 winning only one game and completing 54.9 percent of his passes. He
finished his stint as a starter with four touchdown passes to six interceptions.
The offense can continue to develop in Garoppolo’s absence, but if Beathard will
hold them back with his own play is something to watch. For Week 4, the Chargers
will be without defensive lineman Joey Bosa. Wide receivers Keenan Allen (Knee)
is questionable while wide receiver Travis Benjamin (foot) is a game-time
decision. Right tackle Joe Barksdale will also be out after injuring his knee in
Week 1The 49ers are fighting numerous injuries. Matt Breida (knee) remains a
gametime decision. Cornerback Richard Sherman (calf) will be missing the
game.Safety Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) also is doubtful.Nuts and boltsLocation:
