Will This Even Matter?

The reality of the situation is that, except for looking good on a Congressman’s resume, it doesn’t matter which bill is passed. The days of music radio being king of the distribution hill have passed. The remaining stations that still play music basically follow what’s hot on streaming. Most have since turned to talk radio anyway.

If the American Music Fairness Act passes, more stations will give up the music ghost and turn to talk radio, especially the few independant stations that are living on the financial edge. Radio has a very limited playlist anyway, so only the top 0.1% of artists will reap any rewards. Simply put, the time has long passed when a bill like this could have done some good for the music community. pgslot

That doesn’t mean that the bill shouldn’t go forward. One of the things that laws can do is protect for unforeseen circumstances. A new yet to be realized technological advancement may make radio hot again. Or an unanticipated change in streaming could send listeners flocking back to the radio airwaves. Or a new media distribution technology may be invented under which this law can apply.

Of course, getting artists and copyright holders fairly paid for what they do right now is the primary intent. That’s worth the effort right there. Sadly, I fear that the American Music Fairness Act is headed for the same scrape heap as previous efforts for artist justice.

And we will still fall into the same league as North Korea, Iran and China.
