The fashion industry is going berserk over the entry of an up-and-coming fashion designer. Minju Kim has recently been brought into the limelight after securing a win in the Netflix show Next in Fashion. Following the win, Minju Kim has established her position as one of the rising stars in the fashion industry. As a winner, she got the chance of receiving $250,000 to start her collection on the fashion partner for Next in Fashion called Net-a-Porter.
About Minju Kim and her fashion designing:
Minju Kim is a fashion designer based in South Korea. She pursued her degree in fashion designing at the Samsung Art and Design Institute in South Korea, followed by a masters’ program at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. She developed her interest in fashion through the encouragement of her parents which ultimately led her to pursue it and bring out her creative talents through her art.
Minju Kim recently visited New York for a cocktail party following her victory in the Netflix show. She gained a lot of attention which was probably not well-fitting for her due to her humility and down-to-earth nature. The 32-year-old designer always remained determined about her work, and she has visibly put her heart and soul into her designs.
“I’ve always worked really hard on every element of my collections, from developing the concept to designing prints and ultimately bringing it all to life. I put my heart and soul into my work, and that’s what I’m going to continue doing”, says Kim in a report to Net-a-Porter.
Following the five months until the release of Next in Fashion,
Minju Kim had been working constantly to execute her designs. She knew she would gain world recognition once she released her collection on the website of Net-a-Porter. She did not feel any different until Netflix released Next in Fashion. That was when her popularity grew, and that was when her designs began to be truly noticed.
Right from the planning to the execution, Minju Kim’s efforts are on another level. Her uniqueness and panache bring out a sophisticated quality to her designs. But she had not realized her talent until she joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. It stirred her creativity here under the influence of recognized fashion design instructors like Walter Van Beirendonck.
Her success story:
Once she recognized her passion for designing, her flame never doused. Right after graduating in the year 2014,
Minju Kim was shortlisted for the famous LVHM prize. Ever since then, Minju Kim has been working hard on establishing her label in the fashion industry. She built her business in South Korea with the help of her sister, who took care of the brand recognition and operations of the business. Her sister felt that she was restricting Minju’s creative side by her commercial intentions for the brand. But according to Minju, it was her sister who brought out her talent in fashion designing.
She has a unique take on aesthetics, and her designs revolve around the traditional boundaries of feminine fashion. Her fondness for themes and patterns is visible in her collections as she sticks to a pattern throughout the collection. The use of bold colors feels like she is trying to express her confidence through her art instead of herself.
In the process of establishing a successful label, Minju Kim joined the competition in dire need of leveling up in her work. She needed to push her boundaries further to expand her artistic capabilities. “It was the gradual uncovering of Minju’s personality, talent, and confidence as a designer that I found most moving,” said Tan France, co-host of Next in Fashion, in a report to Net-a-Porter, referring to Minju Kim as a contestant.
Conclusion
Minju Kim, with a character of utmost modesty, keeps true to the fact that she never expected to win. More of her collections will be released soon. With this, she has just taken a step onto the stairway of fame. Her unique aesthetics and ingenious patterns will lead her brand towards soaring heights. And she will surely rule the fashion world in a few years with her creativity and artistic style.
