Students in primary classes often use ambiguous and unwanted words. Disrespect to teachers sometimes starts as they
move forward in their school. By the time they enter middle school, they have
developed all the ways and means to behave without values. It is a pity to see
a student in 10th and 12th class sitting with his mobile in the canteen and
engaging in aimless Facebook while it is time to finish what he has learned.
Such a situation is frustrating for teachers who are trying to create
individuals with social and moral responsibilities.
In this this fast-paced world of globalization, junk food, terrorism, and bribery, students
are under constant pressure to compete and prove themselves. It is hoped that
the education system of any country will equip the next generation to better
adapt to the dynamic society. The process of school education and higher
education should equip students to distinguish between dos and don'ts at all
stages of life. Our country adds meaning to education by combining 'karma' and
'dharma'. Ancient Indian education created citizens with strong moral laws,
lifestyles, and behaviors. But does our current education system train students
to accept the roles they expect? We feel that values are being eroded from the
strict boundaries that we call education. Teaching-learning continues today,
and so does the production of citizens. But does our current education system
equip students for these challenges? Are we preparing individuals or human
beings?
We teachers must work and embrace the challenge of incorporating values into our
education. We need to develop ways and means to produce not only individuals
but also human beings. The current article is an attempt to explore the scope
of value education at the school level.
Ways to bring about change
Value education starts at home, but it continues throughout life. Value education in schools plays an
important role in the life of an individual. Value-based education can shape
their future and add purpose to their lives. It helps them to lead a proper
life.
School is the place where the child spends most of his school years. Many of the attributes and behaviors
they develop throughout their lives are rooted in school. It is not enough to
include value education as a textbook, a graded subject, or a weekly lecture.
The school should give due importance and priority to inculcate these desirable
values in the children. More than just a fact, specialized learning experiences
need to be designed in such a way that students understand the value of value
in the true sense. This learning evidence can be designed on two levels -
curriculum and co-curricular.
