Excerpts from the interview:
Is the hazri still on at the courts?
It's yet on and it is coming to an end hopefully now.
Do you ever wonder at this strange fate that makes you go through one ordeal after the other?
Maybe I am the chosen one (laughs)
But has there been any phase in your life when there have no problems?
I really don't remember, right from the drug phase, to my mom's illness, to Richa's death just keeps going on and on.
Where did the actual taking of drugs happen?
When I came back from boarding school in college it was just the in thing at that time somebody said try it and I tried it and that was it for nine years of my life.
After the rehab, did you have to fight the desire?
After two years when I came back, my servant said somebody has come to meet you it was my drug vendor, he said I have got some new stuff, keep it, it was that one second I had to decide .. either I take it or tell him to get lost and I chose the latter that day I knew it, I had won that battle .. I did not want to get back into the 9 years of hell.
In 1993, you were at the prime of your life and career, your films were hits, you were No. 1, when you were arrested, that would have destroyed most young men were you scared of your future then?
Initially I did get scared, but I just wanted to come out of it, I had not done anything, I was innocent.
Sanju, you spent your 35th and 36th birthday in a dark dreadful cell, I just want to know why you didn't break?
I will tell you one incident, everyday dad used to come and meet me in jail and used to tell me kal ho jayega and this went on for 3-4 months,, and I just broke down and told him, dad kab hoga, when? And it was for the first time he held me by my collar, with tears in his eyes he told me, Sanju I can't do anything, I am sorry son I went to my cell, I cried for 4-5 hours, but after that I said nothing is going to make me break now.
Love also has played games with you; do you still believe in it?
I do, but for me to settle down, I can't do it. I'm 46, I have lived my life, I can't see myself getting married, not again, I have moved on.
You still haven't divorced Rhea as such?
There's a procedure in America, she being an American citizen, she applies for divorce, the process has been taken care of.
Would you like to start life all over again?
I think I have started life all over again. So this Sunday don't miss Sanjay Dutt on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal on Star World, Sunday, March 12th at 9.30 p.m.
