PIA Plane Tragedy: 45 Die as Fokker Crashes in Pakistan

MULTAN: A plane of Pakistan International Airlines [PIA] crashed into a field near Multan Airport in a ball of flames on Monday and all the 45 passengers and crew were reported dead.

President and Prime Minister have regretted the unfortunate incident and ordered an inquiry of the incident.

Reports say that Flight PK 688, carrying 41 passengers and four crew had left Multan for the eastern city of Lahore came down a few minutes after it took off.

Flames were rising from the scene of the crash at Suraj Miani, near Multan, where the plane appeared to have hit an electric power line while crashing.

PIA and Civil Aviation officials and fire tenders and ambulances immediately reached to the spot of crash and started relief operations.

The passengers reportedly included two Punjab high court Judges of Multan bench Justice Muhammad Nawaz and Justice Nazeer Siddiqui, Brig. Aftab, Brig. Farhat Sabir, Vice Chancellor Bahaudding Zakaria University Bahawalpur Dr. Muhammad Naseer and other noted persons.

Many of the burned corpses were charred to the extent to become unidentifiable.

No Survivors

"Everyone is dead. I am standing at the site," police chief Iftikhar Babar said.

Flight PK 688, en route for Lahore before flying on to Islamabad, crashed three minutes after take-off from Multan airport, said Hasan Jaffery, a PIA spokesman.

The Fokker plane was carrying 41 passengers and four crew.

"Bodies are badly charred. The debris has caught fire," a witness said by adding that rescue workers from the privately run relief foundation Edhi, the Civil Aviation Authority and the army were taking part in the rescue operation.

"There are few bodies which are identifiable," said Shahid Pervez, a civil defense official, as rescue workers loaded the corpses into ambulances.

The plane, laden with fuel, burst into flames after crashing near a state primary school, around three km (two miles) from the airport.

Police chief Babar quoted some witnesses as saying they saw flames coming from the aircraft shortly after it took off, and it appeared to be tilting to the right.

"I saw the plane diving downwards. It hit electricity wires and then crashed after hitting a wall of an orchard," said Mohammad Akram, a farmer who was working his fields. He said the plane burst into flames after impact.

The Deceased

A report, wired by a Pakistani paper on its website says that Vice Chancellor of Bahuddin Zakaria University Prof. Muhammad Naseer Khan, Brig. Aftab Ahmed, Brig. Farhat Sabir, Justice Muhammad Nawaz Bhatti and Justice Nazeer Ahmed Siddiqui were among the 45 dead in PIA Flight PK-688 crash near Multan.

The deceased included 41 passengers and four crewmembers of the ill-fated plane.

Farhat Sabir, Justice Muhammad Nawaz Bhatti, Justice Nazeer Ahmed Siddiqui, Abdul Rahman, Ahmed Ijaz, Arshad Azad, Imtiaz Anwar, Mrs. Kanwal Iqbal, Mirza Arshad Baig, Muhammad Murtaza, Salim Shah, Shakhi Muhammad, Waseem Ahmed, Aftab Hussain Khan, Ijaz Ali, Asmatullah Khan, Ashfaq Ahmed, Malik Saeed, Muhammad Irfan, Raja Iftikhar Ali, Miss Sameena Mushtaq, Dr. Suhail Ahmed, Zia Hyder, Abdul Rauf, Ali Imran, Mr. Anjum, Dr. Farzana Kausar, Mrs. Capt. Hasnain, Muhammad Aslam Shad, Muhammad Islam Gul, Miss Tehseen Zehra, Altaf Hussain, Miss Eisha, Dr. Farheen Fatima, Mr. Habib, Dr. Humaira Ashraf, Muhammad Arshad Atif, Muhammad Naeem Mughal, Capt. Naveed Tariq.

The four crew onboard were Capt. Hamid, First Officer Ibrar Chughtai, airhostesses Tabana Jamil and Amna Sikandar Azeem, said the report on the News website.

Multan mourns Fokker plane crash
MULTAN: Following the devastating Fokker plane crash here, the city wears a grim mourning look, as all the business centres have since then remained closed.

The ill-fated plane crashing near Suruj Miani yesterday had perished with 45 precious lives on board.

The business community here has announced a shutter down mourning today, when ‘Ghaibana’ funeral prayers of the Fokker plane crash dead would be offered at 6 P. M. in the evening here at KMCB Ground.

I got this news after 17 Minutes of Crash..My Friend's Sister and Brother in Law Died in this Crash.

Its really awful...Big People...

I am really sad for for every one but specially for Justice and Brigadiers....Nation's Loss
