The silvered glass held all it saw
kept from its viewer every flaw
Yet knew reflected in her eyes
the inner truth and hidden lies

A gift received when she was ten
full fifty year had sped since then
Each picture captured in the glass
recorded every year to pass

How happy was the image seen
when she as an expectant teen
Had stood before it to relate
the eagerness of her first date

At twenty-one another tale
adjustment of a wedding veil
Eyes that sparkled clear and bright
while speaking of the coming night

At thirty with a little aid
she hid the lines that worry made
And in the glass she’d clearly see
the image of what used to be

Fifty passed, she still denied
her raven hair came bottle dyed
While lips that held a deeper red
refused to count the years that fled

With clever makeup would prepare
to make the viewer unaware.
That time had changed her youthful face
and left her mother's in its place

The silvered glass held all it saw
found ways of masking every flaw
Concealing from the viewer's eyes
that there are times the mirror lies
