Muralitharan ruled out of Twenty20 Championship

August 30, 2007

Muttiah Muralitharan has sustained an elbow injury which will rule him out of next month's Twenty20 World Championships in South Africa.

"Murali is affected by an elbow injury and he will be out for four to six weeks," Kangadaran Mathivanan, the secretary of the Sri Lankan cricket board, told AFP. "He is definitely out of the Twenty20 [World Championships]."

While playing for Lanchashire on Wednesday, Murali walked off the field with shoulder trouble after bowling more than 33 overs against Kent. Murali, who became the quickest to take 200 wickets for Lanchashire, was putting in his last county appearance this season and was scheduled to fly home over the weekend to join the Sri Lankan team's preparations for the Twenty20 World Championships.

Muttiah Muralitharan could yet play a part in September's Twenty20 World Championship, in spite of straining his bicep during Lancashire's drawn match against Kent.

The Sri Lanka spinner was forced off the field on the first day at Canterbury after bowling 33 overs when he strained his right bicep, and the early signs were that he would be out of action for four or six weeks. However, no decision on his participation in the tournament will be made until Muralitharan returns home to Sri Lanka tomorrow.

"We got the results back today from Leeds and basically it is just showing some inflammation around the bicep,'' Sam Byrne, the Lancashire physio, told PA. "We're sending the scans back with Murali to Sri Lanka and they'll manage it and constantly reassess it over the next week.
