Panaji, "Khuda Ke Liye", the first Pakistani movie screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), turned out to be a huge hit here Sunday with veteran filmmakers, actors and critics making a beeline for it.

Touching upon contemporary themes like fundamentalism as well as discrimination of Muslims in the West post 9/11, director Shoaib Mansoor's film was shown amid tight security.

Renowned director M.S. Sathyu, filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, TV actress Kavita Chaudhary and actress-social activist Nafisa Ali were among those gathered to watch "Khuda Ke Liye" at the IFFI.

"The helplessness of the liberal Muslims is captured beautifully and the director tactfully shows how society is taken over by fundamentalists and how the liberals are isolated and mocked," said Chaudhary.

"I have also seen 'Khamosh Pani' and in that the issue of fundamentalism is dealt with emotionally. However, in this film the director has used a dramatised argument to tackle the issue," said the actress remembered for TV serial "Udaan".

Mansoor's narrative, depicting travails of a liberal Muslim family, travels across three continents as his characters are based in the US, Britain, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The cast includes Fawad Afzal Khan, Iman Ali and Hameed Sheikh.

Many critics, however, were not impressed.

"The plot line was interesting, but sadly lacking in terms of methods of cinema. The camera was far too static. The narrative followed on expected lines. The images did not drive the narrative," Kolkata-based film critic Abhijit Ghosh-Dastidar told IANS.

"The characters portrayed were banal and stereotypes. The typical story didn't add up any visual excitement, except for some thriller effects."

He, however, added: "The film could have a commercial release in India as the director safeguards all religious sentiments."

Chaudhary echoed similar views but felt it "needs a little tightening in the second half before it is opened for general viewing".

Sapna Verma, a student here, said: "I cannot comment on technical aspects of the movie but it surely helps in understanding problems of the Muslims. It actually puts us in their shoes and makes us understand what they face."

The film is being shown in the competition section of the festival that also has entries from 12 other countries. And it is going to packed house for the next shows as well.

Elsewhere in the evening, there were few takers for "Aar Paar", shown as homage to legendary music director O.P. Nayyar who composed hits like "Babuji Dheere Chalna" and "Yeh Lo Main Hari Piya" in the 1950s and 1960s.

Pak film 'Khuda Kay Liye' a big draw at IFFI
Panaji | Sunday, Nov 25 2007 IST

Pakistani film 'Khuda Kay Liye' (In the name of God), which attempts to confront fundamentalist interpretation of Islam, its effect on the Pakistani youth and the difficulties faced by Muslims in general post 9/11, was a huge draw at the ongoing 38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here today.

It was the first ever Pakistani film, directed by Shoaib Mansoor, one of the prominent personalities from the entertainment industry in the country, to be screened at IFFI. The cinema hall at INOX was packed to the capacity with a galaxy of stars including noted directors Mani Ratnam, M S Sathyu, Sudhir Mishra, Ketan Mehta and Nafisa Ali among others.

The film had an added attraction for viewers here because of the special appearance of veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah who plays a maulana with moderate views on religion as expressed in his terse remark, ''deen mein daarhi hai, magar daarhi hi mein deen nahi hota'' (sporting beard may be religious, but religion does not mean only sporting a beard).

The film was an attempt to confront the interpretation of Islam given by the fundamentalist clergy and showed the opposition building up among the civil society against this version of Islam.

The film also tries to give the message that terrorist acts by some and state excesses in some cases should not be allowed to poison the relationship among people of the nations and different religious communities.

The protagonist, who suffers at the hands of US investigative agencies in wake of the 9/11 incidents, at one place writes to his American wife ''do not hate all Muslims because some of them harmed your country and I will not hate US because some people did injustice to me.'' ''It was a well made movie which treated the difficult theme very deftly,'' was the general comment given by the audience as they came out of the theatre.

Some viewers felt that though the court scenes were preachy on religion, they were needed to dispel the misgivings about the teachings of Islam. The music of the film which contributes greatly to the impact of the film is composed by Khawar Jawad and Rohail Hayat. The lead roles have been played by Shaan, Fawad Afzal Khan and Iman Ali.

'Khuda Kay liye' centres around three people - Mansoor who goes to US for higher education in music. During his visit, the tragic events of 9/11 takes place and he is arrested by the American authorities on suspicion.

Mansoor's younger brother falls to extremist views on Islam after being motivated by his extremist friend on the ''path of God''. He gives up his musical activities for the same.

Then there is Mariam, a cousin of the brothers who arrives from UK. Her father wants to marry her off to one of them to prevent her from marrying a Britisher. Naseeruddin Shah plays the powerful cameo of a Muslim scholar who clarifies the often misunderstood and misinterpreted tenets of Islam during the course of a court case.

Shoaib Mansoor has produced and directed TV shows for PTV and also penned stories and screenplays for his drama productions.

IFFI REVIEW: Naseer's Khuda Kay Liye
The first film from Pakistan screened at IFFI is radical and has a lot of meat
Abhishek Mande | Buzz18

In the media centre at IFFI, a huge poster of Khuda Kay Liye stares down at the journalists running against their deadlines. Sporting a flowing white beard, a forbearing Naseeruddin Shah looks out into nothingness as two minarets stand in the backdrop. It may be a marketing gimmick for the producers to put up Naseer in the poster for their India campaign. The actor, through his 15-minute role shows exactly why he is their poster boy in this country.

Khuda Kay Liye tells the story of the rather dicey situation in which the Muslims are caught up today. Janie (Austin Marie Sayre) and Mary (Iman Ali) live in two different continents. But little do they know how closely their lives are interconnected. While Janie falls in love with her music school classmate Mansoor (Shan), Marie's father gets her forcefully married to Mansoor's brother Sarmad (Fawad Afzal Khan). Sarmad who also happens to be a musician and her first cousin has been led astray by a radical Muslim cleric Maulana Tahiri (Rasheed Naz) to 'follow the path of Islam'.

Meanwhile as Mary tries to escape from the small tribal village in Afghanistan where she is being held captive, Mansoor gets wrongly indicted in America's post-9/11 witch hunt. What follows is a tale of pathos and utter helplessness of the four protagonists, each trying to fight a battle within and without.

The film ends on a bitter-sweet note but one cannot help notice the sheer brilliance in its narrative structure which balances itself ever so sensitively. So while in one scene you see the harsh landscape of Afghanistan and Mary's despair, the next one with Mansoor and Janie making music in Chicago comes as a visual and emotional respite. This see saw-like movement in the film's story and some soulful music tracks enable you to sit through the extremely grim and depressing movie.

Khuda Kay Liye primarily comes across as a tale of the two brothers with opposing ideas about their religion. However at a deeper level it also tells the story of the women in their lives, their travails and tribulations.

It further fuels a debate on the tenets of Islam, which are often abused than used. Of course, while raking up this extremely sensitive issue, the film with its solid research takes the side of the modernists.

It is here that Maulana Wali (Naseeruddin Shah) enters and spells out the principles as he has interpreted them and stresses on the free will of each individual. His speech from the witness box is moving, powerful and most certainly one of the best we have seen in a very long time on celluloid. For those who haven't seen this actor on stage, here is just a sample of his sheer brilliance.

Khuda Kay Liye opens our eyes to some of the most gruesome acts committed under the name of religion but in the end subtly reminds us about the dignity in forgiving.

Verdict: Go watch this film if it manages to release in India. Else wait for the DVD. And yes, if you can, most certainly do buy the OST.

OMG!Just look at the reviews and espeacially this one...
