I don't know whether this topic should be here or religion but it's about why women aren't allowed to drive. In Saudi Arabia a group of women protested against the law that limits womens' rights in that they were not allowed to drive. They took their family cars, later they were arrested.
so what is this? is it an islamic ruling or what? I read in a fatwa book that women aren't allowed to drive because it causes them to socialise more with the opposite sex. I'm not clear on how that works out, cos if youre catching a bus or walking you're by far more likely to run into lads than you are when driving from A to B. you're sat in your car on your own. on a bus a guy can be sat right next to you. strange world. i'm sure theres a better reason. i'll try n get the details of the book.

i cant get the reason either but if they say """because it causes them to socialise more with the opposite sex""" then phones and i-net should b banned too,,
aur agar masla opposite sex se door rakhne ka hai to admi bhi to drive karte hein + they use phone and net too

Since it is not in relegious section and since I don't have Islamic knowledge on this matter as well, I am assuming that in Saudi Arabia women do complete hijab. By completeness I mean they have to cover their eyes as well. With hijab it becomes difficult to have clear vision all the time because it might hinder with it. Also, while driving it almost seems impossible to adjust hijaab if you need to. It might lead to some serious accidents and thus there goes their rule of not allowing women to drive.

You mean the Niqaab? hmm thats true, however there are many women here that drive with the niqaab and have no problem. My driving instructor a few years back was a full niqaabi and she taught people to drive. Me...I wear the hijaab, i've never faced a hijaab adjustment prblem (lol) while driving.

if they learn how to drive, they might run away..i dont know, one possible reason
driving symbolizes freedom, and women have no freedom in SA
lol maghar aurat paidal bhi to bhaag sakti hai na, hum yeh to nahi keh sakte ke SA ki auratein ko koi azadi nahin he, yeh bhi kissi suboot ke baghair sach nahin ho sakta. Jaise kaafir log kehte hein ke islam mein aurat ko azadi nahin de ja sakti, is statement mein to koi sachai nahin he.

thankyou baby sis, but we do know that Islam covers every aspect of life whether modern life or way back then. I just thought maybe there are pointers which would help answer the question.

Nah ah, women are the best drivers, statistically too. Yes, but as far as I know it is only in Saudi Arabia that the are not allowed to drive.

Dr Zakir Naik, is an very learned induvidual and his lectures are of great benefit.
I found some information in another book this has somewhat made it a little clearer, to avoid being done for plagiarism, I scanned the cover so that Muhammad bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Musnad won't feel the need to sue me.
Hope you can read them, the book was quite fat and i couldn't fit it in the scanner

And yea ... Dis should be moved to religious corner so ppl wid actuall Knowledge of Islam May answere this!
Errr, thats the thing, like i said above, i'm not sure whether there is islamic ruling concerning the matter. I'm not wanting only religious explanations i'm asking whether there are other reasons as to why women can't drive as the one given doesn't really answer the question.
