WASHINGTON D.
Adidas Stan Smith Roze .C. – David Steckel put it rather bluntly after a 4-2 loss on Friday night. Four powerplay goals by the Capitals, including a hat trick from Dennis Wideman trumped the Leafs in a game they controlled five-on-five, made painfully clear by the 26-12 shot differential at even-strength. "Anytime you give up four powerplay goals youre not going to win a (expletive) game," Steckel said. "Sorry, but its the truth. "We didnt have a timely penalty kill where we needed it tonight." Ron Wilson lamented his teams lack of discipline in the loss. "We took some bad penalties," Wilson said. "And its funny, bad penalties will always bite you in the rear end…Bad penalties, undisciplined penalties did us in tonight, simple as that." Specifically drawing Wilsons ire was a Joey Crabb boarding penalty in the second period, which put the Leafs down five-on-three, leading to the third Capitals goal from Nicklas Backstrom. "You go out there with a negative feeling when youve just taken a penalty thats unnecessary," he said. "Bad penalties, we have to play with a lot more discipline than that." "We took some undisciplined penalties," Steckel concurred, "but we should be able to kill em." The Leafs penalty kill dropped to second worst in the NHL at 74.3%. In all, the unit has allowed 29 powerplay goals against, worst in the NHL. Five Points 1. Whats distressing for the Leafs and their penalty kill is the upward signs achieved in the month of November; the unit was a respectable 82% (40-49), this after a disastrous October of just 72% (34-47). Four games into December and theyve fallen back to 71% (12-17). Steckel and Phillipe Dupuis have been the teams top pair up front with Carl Gunnarsson and Dion Phaneuf manning the blueline. Joey Crabb and Tim Connolly have typically formed the second unit with Luke Schenn and Jake Gardiner on the back-end. Wilson utilized a couple additional forward pairings as Fridays action wore on, teaming Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel as well as Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin. Colby Armstrong was also used, albeit sparingly. He was arguably the teams best penalty killer a year ago, but saw limited action even before the injury this fall. Its worth wondering whether Wilson will expand his options if the unit continues to struggle. 2. Armstrong missed 32 games with a variety of injuries last season and another 23 to start this season. His mood was particularly glum after the ankle injury he suffered on October 19th. "After the first three or four days I was pretty down," he said, noting a change shortly thereafter. "I just decided to deal with it in a different way than I had the last ones where I was just upset the whole time and frustrated. This time I just shut the meter down and just tried to relax through it, just deal with the timeline and the process and work my butt off." The meter Armstrong is referring to is something he dubs, "My give a (expletive) meter". "Not like I stopped caring, but in that aspect with the injury stuff, I just toned it out and tried to take a different approach coming to the rink. "I even got comments from our trainers about my attitude through this injury and my positive outlook on it when coming to the rink everyday. Some days were tough coming in with some news where you cant do as much as you thought or its taking longer than you wanted. But theres nothing you can really do, so youve just got to take a day at a time…Its a pretty relieving feeling though to be back." 3. Kulemin, Grabovski and Clarke MacArthur hadnt played together since mid-November, but were reunited on Friday night. The unit looked as cohesive as it has all season. "They were skating. They had some chemistry. Id still like to see them take some more shots and simplify their game a little bit, but it was a much better effort, more consistent throughout the night," Wilson said. Kulemins goal drought extended to 22 games in the loss, but for the first time in five games he recorded a shot, albeit just one. 4. Brian Burke met with his players moments after the Bell Media-Rogers purchase of MLSE was announced on Friday morning. He had a simple message. "Our job is to win hockey games," he explained. "Ownership issues are something that are beyond our control. I just told the players youre not going to see a difference short-term or long-term; our job is to still win hockey games. That doesnt change when an ownership interest moves or changes in percentage." 5. James Reimer made his third start since returning from a six-week absence on Friday. Perhaps the biggest adjustment for the 23-year-old after such a lengthy layoff is the sheer lack of game action hes endured. "Overall I think its just the general play of the game," he said, prior to Fridays game. "In practice, guys come down the wing, shoot, they come down, pass across, shoot; theres repetition and theres not much variable per se. During the game, a guy comes in, shoot, it gets tipped or it goes off somebodys shin-pad or it goes off somebodys skate and across the ice and you have to react…The more you play it comes back." Reimer has yet to win since coming back, making 21 saves in Fridays loss. Bonus Points Phil Kessel added his 18th of the year, jumping back into a tie for the overall lead alongside Milan Michalek. Kessel sits a point back of Claude Giroux in the points race (37-36)...Cody Franson scored his second goal in the last four games and third this season. The 24-year-old has six points in the last nine games (plus-4 rating) and logged 17:16 against the Capitals, his highest total since mid-October.
