OSTERSUND, Sweden -- It was a triumphant start to the world junior curling championships for Canadas Brendan Bottcher.

"It was nice to come out the first game and play well. It was a little shaky off the start but we settled in," Bottcher said. Bottcher, 20, plays twice Sunday, facing the United States and Switzerland. "We probably need to start a little bit stronger next time. We were just nervous going into our first game, but we worked well as a team and were able to battle through it," he said. "This is the first time in Europe for the whole team, none of us have played in Europe before. The time change took a little getting used to, but other than that, its been great." Jocelyn Peterman of Red Deer, Alta., opened the womens draw with a 10-3 loss to the Czech Republic in just six ends. Peterman scored one in the first end, but fell behind 6-1 through three. Peterman, 18, rallied with two in the fourth but the Czechs scored two in each of the fifth and sixth ends to round out the scoring. Petermans rink then defeated the defending champions from Scotland 7-5 in the night draw. Canada gave up a single in the first end and then let Scotland steal another before Peterman produced a nice draw for two to level the game after three ends. The Canadians scored two in the seventh and followed that up with a single steal in the eighth when Scottish skip Hannah Fleming was forced to cut her losses and draw for second shot to give Canada a 6-4 lead. The Scots scored one in the ninth, but Peterman knocked out the only Scottish rock in the tenth for her victory. "We just got rid of our first-game nerves and the whole team played a lot better in that game," Peterman said. "We were pretty consistent the whole game and got a couple of breaks with some nice shots." Canada hasnt won gold in either the mens or womens event since 2003.

Lynchs attorney, Ivan Golde, told The Associated Press on Thursday of the plea deal that was reached with the Alameda County District Attorney Office. The plea will be formally entered in court in Oakland, Calif., on Friday. ESPN first reported the plea agreement. Lynch was arrested in Jully 2012 on investigation of driving under the influence after he was pulled over on a freeway in Oakland.
