OAKLAND, Calif. -- With the wind, Stefen Romero thought his deep fly might not have enough and he would be denied his first major league home run. He put his head down and took off running anyway. Romero hit it hard enough to clear the left field fence for a tiebreaking solo shot in the fifth inning, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Monday night for their third straight victory and eighth in 10 games. Romero is taking home a souvenir ball, and the gratification he knew why his teammates were giving him the silent treatment afterward. "I tried to play it off a little bit and went all the way to the end of the dugout and took off my batting glove, put my bat away and tried to beeline to the edge of the dugout so they wouldnt rush me," Romero said. "Then (Robinson) Cano gets a base hit. After the base hit, thats when they all just lost it and congratulated me." Chris Young (2-0) allowed two hits over six strong innings to win his second straight start. He began the year with four straight no-decisions as he came back from shoulder surgery that caused him to miss much of 2013. The right-hander faced the minimum through three and didnt allow a hit until Jed Lowries one-out single in the fourth. Brandon Moss hit a tying two-run homer two batters later. "Hes 6-foot-10 and hes throwing out of the sky," Moss said of Young. "It looks like hes throwing soft and the radar gun says hes throwing soft, but the way he pitches up and down, it makes it tough." Romero, a 25-year-old rookie, homered in his 53rd career at-bat. He is batting .306 over his last nine games. "Fortunately it got out," Romero said of the wind. "Just not having done it this year, its pretty sweet to get that one out of the way." Moss hit his drive to right to give the As brief momentum only to see Romero connect in the top of the fifth for a Seattle lead. Brad Miller added an RBI single in the sixth. Scott Kazmir (4-1), off to the best start in his career, was tagged for eight hits and four runs in six innings. "He had his way with us for two outings in a row," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I thought our guys were probably a little bit more determined tonight, better at-bats, better approach. We were able to get his pitch count up a little bit." The As were without two key outfielders and hitters to begin the game with the injured Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Reddick out of the starting lineup. Cespedes entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and stayed in the game. Oakland did little else after Moss big hit and kicked off a 10-game homestand -- the clubs first of three such stints at the Coliseum this season -- with just its third loss in seven matchups against Seattle so far. Young won back-to-back starts for the first time since May 19 and 24, 2009, for the Padres. He also improved to 14-6 in 29 career May starts. His April 6 outing at Oakland was his first in the majors since Sept. 29, 2012, with the New York Mets. "Stuff-wise, Im not there. I dont know if Ill ever be. Ive had three shoulder operations," Young said. "The shoulder feels healthy. I feel like when Ive been healthy in my career Ive pitched pretty well." Fernando Rodney, Seattles fifth reliever on a night the bullpen was thin, finished for his eighth save in nine opportunities as Seattle earned its first three-game winning streak since sweeping a season-opening series at the Angels. NOTES: McClendon expected to name his second starter for Wednesdays doubleheader on Tuesday. Felix Hernandez will start one of the games. The teams must make up a game from April 4, when Oakland didnt use a tarp through a heavy rainstorm and the field was unplayable. ... Oakland RHP Sonny Gray (4-1, 1.91 ERA) earned AL Pitcher of the Month honours for April. ... As RF Reddick could miss another day as he nurses a sprained ankle suffered Sunday in Boston. ... Mariners OF Logan Morrison, sidelined since April 16 with a strained right hamstring, is recovering more slowly than expected. Even McClendon is surprised. "I have been. Theres no sense in arguing about it," he said. "When I get him I get him. Until then Ill just read his tweets." Chris Scott Panthers Jersey . Louisville (14-1, 2-0 ACC) was down 22-18 at halftime after shooting a woeful 22.2 percent over the first 20 minutes, but went on a 17-0 tear following the intermission and never trailed again in its first conference home game as an ACC member. Terry Rozier netted six of his 15 points during the pivotal spurt, while Jones had all but two of his points in the second half. Wayne Blackshear added 11 points for Louisville, but finished 3-of-13 from the floor. The Cardinals shot just 32.7 percent for the game, but held Clemson to a 30.8 percent success rate in a defensive slugfest. No games going to be easy. Everybodys going to play you tough, Rozier said. Clemson (8-6, 0-2), coming off a 24-point home loss to No. 18 North Carolina on Saturday, was led by Jaron Blossomgames 15 points. Damarcus Harrison finished with 12 in defeat. After recording a mere six field goals in 27 attempts prior to the break, the Cardinals matched that number in less than 4 1/2 minutes during their game- changing sequence. Blackshear got it started with a 3-pointer on Louisvilles initial possession and Rozier sank a go-ahead layup in transition on the Cardinals next trip down the court. Montrezl Harrell followed with a thunderous putback dunk, and another Rozier layup preceded Jones triple that staked Louisville to a 30-22 lead just 3:36 into the period. The message I tried to get to the team at halftime was, Guys, the (2013) championship team understood styles, and you dont, Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said. We didnt understand it was going to be a dog fight. Our guys have to understand the ACC and what its all about. Harrell threw down another jam to cap the run and put the Cardinals up by a 35-22 count with 133:27 left to play.dddddddddddd By the time we got our legs back under us, we were in trouble, said Clemson head coach Brad Brownell. Theres so much (pressure by Louisvilles defense), so much random trapping that it forces your guys to make plays. Clemson did finally regroup, with Harrison and Blossomgame knocking down consecutive treys to ignite a 9-0 push that cut the margin to four. Jones answered with back-to-back 3-pointers, but the Tigers countered with an 8-0 stretch to pull within 42-40 with six minutes to go. Louisville then turned it up a notch on the defensive end, as Clemson didnt make another basket until Donte Granthams layup with 41 seconds left. The Cardinals outscored the Tigers 9-2 in between, while sealing the outcome by hitting 10-of-12 foul shots in the final minute. After going 50 percent or better from the field in wins over Long Beach State and Wake Forest that preceded Wednesdays test, Louisville misfired on 11 of its first 15 attempts in this one. The Cardinals problems were compounded with Harrell, the teams second- leading scorer, on the bench for most of the first half after picking up two quick fouls on a night he was held to a season-low six points. Louisville was still able to keep it close behind its defense. However, the Tigers ended the frame on an 8-2 run, which Blossomgame and Harrison started with consecutive 3-pointers, to enter the break owning a slim 22-18 edge. Game Notes Louisville went 4-of-10 from 3-point range in the second half after a 2-of-14 display in the first ... Jones had five of the Cardinals 11 steals ... Clemson has averaged just 56.2 points over its past five games ... The Cardinals have won all four all-time meetings with Clemson, the most recent of which took place in the second round of the 2006 NIT Tournament ... The Tigers have now lost 23 of their last 24 matchups against top five teams. Wholesale NFL Jerseys ' ' '
