VANCOUVER -- Vancouver Canucks head coach John Tortorella has a lot of admiration for his backup goalie.

. Fans at Rogers Arena finally got to see Eddie Lack
for themselves. The 25-year-old Swedish rookie didnt disappoint in his
first-ever home appearance Monday, backstopping Vancouver with 31 saves for his
first NHL shutout as the Canucks downed the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0. With No. 1
goalie Roberto Luongo getting the night off, Lack continued his steady play in
helping Vancouver to a fifth straight win. "The thing I like most about Eddie is
just his presence. I think he settles the team down," said Tortorella. "Theres
not a lot of extra movement in his game. "He doesnt get rattled." Lack usually
plays the second game of back-to-backs in place of Luongo and got the nod with
Mondays contest coming on the heels of Sundays 3-1 home victory over the
Colorado Avalanche. He was solid, if not spectacular, on a night where the
Canucks kept the Hurricanes to the outside. "The guys did an unbelievable job,"
said Lack. "I wouldnt say that I was nervous. It was more excitement." And most
importantly after his fourth win of the campaign, he has the confidence of his
head coach. "I hope it continues. As a coach youre looking at the present but
youre also looking at the future, too, as you go through a long year with a
condensed schedule that we have with the Olympics," said Tortorella. "Huge game
for him tonight. First home game for him -- I thought he handled himself
tremendously." Christopher Tanev and Jannik Hansen, into an empty net, scored
for Vancouver (18-10-5), while Chris Higgins added two assists. Tanev and Lack
were roommates in the American Hockey League before making the jump to the NHL,
so it was only fitting the former provided the game winner for the latters first
career shutout. "Im happy for him," said Tanev. "Ive known him for four years
now. Hes an awesome guy and its an incredible moment for him." Justin Peters
made 24 stops for Carolina (13-13-5), which saw its three-game winning streak
snapped. "I think as a team we deserved a better fate," said Peters. "We played
the right way, we had some chances, just give credit to their team. Lack was
playing well." With Vancouver nursing a 1-0 lead after Tanev opened the scoring
in the first period, Lack made two glove saves early in the third, including a
hot shot off the stick of Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe. Ryan Kesler had a
chance to stretch Vancouvers lead a few moments later, but fired wide on a
2-on-1 with Mike Santorelli. Carolina made a push in the dying minutes, with
Hurricanes captain Eric Staal coming the closest, but Lack was there to the shut
the door before Hansen scored into an empty net. "I thought we were coming on,"
said Carolina head coach Kirk Muller. "You have to fight for your opportunities
and in the second we got going and the third we got a lot of juice but they are
not giving up a lot of chances." Lacks last start came in the Canucks 3-2
victory over the Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C., on Dec. 1 and he watched as
Vancouver gave him a 1-0 lead early in the first on Monday night. Tanev
collected a feed from fellow defenceman Dan Hamhuis and fired a snapshot from
the point that found its way through traffic past Peters at 3:35 for his second
of the season. Hamhuis then jumped into the rush with Canucks shorthanded, but
fired wide of Peters goal. Then with Vancouver still down a man, Peters was
forced to make a pad stop on Kesler, two more saves on Hamhuis and then another
on Henrik Sedin as the Canucks No. 1-ranked penalty killing unit buzzed around
the Hurricanes zone. The visitors started to find their legs in the second
period, but found it difficult to get much going against the tight-checking
Canucks. In one of the few moments of action, Lack was forced to come up big off
the rush, stopping Riley Nash and Patrick Dwyer in quick succession. "I think it
was just as boring a game to play as it was to watch," said Kesler. "Those are
the games we have to win, though. They didnt give us much and we didnt give them
much and Eddie made the saves when he had to." Former Canucks forward Manny
Malhotra played in Vancouver for the first time as a the member of the
Hurricanes. The Canucks shut Malhotra down after nine games last season, saying
they were concerned for the 33-year-olds health following a serious eye injury
during the 2010-11 season. Malhotra got an American League Hockey tryout with
Carolinas affiliate this season before getting called up to the big club. He
made his debut Nov. 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. "Its obviously
disappointing we didnt get the result we wanted," said Malhotra, who spent three
season with Vancouver. "We felt we carried the play for most of the game, we
were effective getting puck in deep, getting sustained pressure on them, but
Lack saw a lot of pucks tonight. We need to do a better job being in the goalies
eyes and battling in front of their net." Notes: The Canucks dont play again
until Friday when they welcome the Edmonton Oilers. Vancouver then hosts Boston
on Saturday night. It will mark the Bruins first visit to Rogers Arena since
their victory in Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup final. ... Carolina plays at
Edmonton on Tuesday.

. A larger-than-life personality known for his intimidating style in the 18-yard
box, Schmeichels career spanned some 20 years -- including a memorable tenure at
Manchester United. LOS ANGELES -- John Danks may have solved his problems away
from home. The left-hander and three relievers combined on a two-hitter,
Leury Garcia hit his first major league home run and the Chicago White Sox beat
the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 on Wednesday in the rubber game of a three-game
series. Danks (4-5) allowed only two hits and one run and struck out five in 7
1-3 inning for his first road win in more than six weeks. He entered the game
1-3 with a 6.83 ERA in five road starts this season. "Weve done a lot of
mechanical changes and a lot of work on the side in between starts," he said.
"Just been trying to stay behind the ball and keep my lanes. I was falling off
and it was causing me to lose velocity and lose location, a bad combination.
"Ive got to keep working on it, but Im feeling good and I feel like Im on a bit
of a roll right now." He also had an infield single in the sixth inning, his
second hit in 28 career plate appearances. "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut,"
he chuckled. "Thats pure luck right there." Dee Gordon led off the first with a
bunt single, but Danks didnt allow another hit until the eighth, when Gordon
doubled down the left field line to end his night. Danks threw 107 pitches and
didnt allow a baserunner past second base. He walked three and hit two batters,
but worked around those miscues. "I felt like I was able to make a pitch when I
needed to," he said. "It wasnt as sharp as Id like but I guess you can call it
effectively wild." A pair of longballs helped put him in position for the win.
Garcia was homerless in his first 74 career games, but ended that drought in
impressive fashion. The 23-yer old Dominican belted a first-pitch fastball from
Josh Beckett deep over the centre field fence, an estimated 400 feet, to stake
Chicago to a 1-0 lead. "He has power, its just more of his game is hitting on
the ground," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "He hit it at the right time
off day thats for sure.

. Ball carries earlier here, if it was later in the night
it may not have gone out." Dunn followed Garcia the next inning, hitting a 2-2
cutter into the right field stands for his ninth homer of the season. The
Dodgers were able to get on the scoreboard once Danks left the game. Reliever
Zach Putnam entered after Gordons double, and walked Yasiel Puig. Gordon came
home on a Hanley Ramirez fielders choice. Scott Downs then entered and induced
Adrian Gonzalez to ground out to end the threat. Chicago closer Ronald Belisario
slammed the door on his former team in the ninth, retiring the side in order for
his fifth save and sending the Dodgers to their sixth loss in eight games. "I
really think you should talk to (the players), Im tired of answering questions
honestly," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Were just not that good. Were
just not getting it done." Beckett (3-3) delivered a quality start but suffered
his second consecutive loss since throwing a no-hitter against Philadelphia on
May 25. The right-hander went six innings and allowed two runs and nine hits,
walked two and struck out six. Relievers Brandon League, Brian Wilson and
Jamey Wright each threw a scoreless inning of relief, but the strong pitching
wasnt enough for the Dodgers with Danks at his best. Notes: A moment of silence
was held before the game for Don Zimmer, who passed away Wednesday at the age of
83. Zimmer played for the Dodgers from 1954-59 and in 1963... Injured Dodgers
outfielder Carl Crawford went through a full pre-game workout that included
batting practice. He is on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle
and is eligible to be activated May 12 ... Beckett reached 2,000 career innings
after completing the fourth inning ... Ventura successfully challenged a call at
third base in the bottom fourth, overturning an earlier safe call and ending the
inning. Ventura is now 4 for 11 on challenges this season.
