HOUSTON -- Yu Darvish dominated the Houston Astros last season. http://www.baseballnationalsmlb.com/authentic-adam-eaton-nationals-jersey/
. This year has been a much different story. Jon Singleton drove in three runs,
and the Astros handled Darvish again in an 8-3 win over the Texas Rangers on
Saturday night to stretch the streak against their in-state rival to seven
victories in a row. Darvish (10-7) allowed nine hits and six runs -- five earned
-- in four-plus innings in his second-shortest start of the season. It was his
second straight tough outing against the Astros after they tagged him for a
season-high 10 hits with six runs in six innings on July 9. "Our hitting coach
(John Mallee), hes done a tremendous job with getting these guys information on
how we can make adjustments after a guy had success against us," manager
Bo Porter said. "And to the credit of our players, theyve taken that information
and theyve done a good job against arguably one of the best pitchers in our
league." Texas manager Ron Washington said the reason why Darvish struggled was
simple. "Just didnt have any command of his fastball and couldnt find another
pitch he could go to until he went back to that fastball," Washington said.
"Just didnt get comfortable on the mound tonight, had no rhythm. Just wasnt his
night." Singleton had an RBI single in Houstons two-run first and added a
two-run double as the Astros tacked on four runs in the fifth. Houstons
Scott Feldman (6-8) allowed eight hits and three runs with six strikeouts in 6
1-3 innings. He held the Rangers scoreless until Jim Adduci hit his first major
league home run with two outs in the sixth inning. The two-run shot landed in
the first row in right field to cut the lead to 6-2. Shin-Soo Choo had four
hits, and his single in the ninth inning was the 1,000th hit of his career.
Matt Dominguezs RBI single after Singletons double chased Darvish in the fifth.
He was replaced by Nate Adcock, who was greeted by a run-scoring single by
Marwin Gonzalez. Darvish struggled with control early and walked two of the
first three batters he faced, with the second walk coming on four pitches. He
struck out Marc Krauss before Singletons RBI single made it 1-0. Dominguez
followed with a single, and an error on the play by second baseman Rougned Odor
allowed Chris Carter to score and push the lead to 2-0. "We were relentless,"
Singleton said. "We made him throw a lot of pitches, and when he did make
mistakes we capitalized on them." Carter, who had three homers in the previous
two games, continued his hot-hitting with two hits, including an RBI double in
the eighth inning. Houston rookie Mike Foltynewicz pitched a scoreless ninth and
wowed the crowd when he threw two consecutive 100 mph fastballs to Odor. THIRD
TIMES THE CHARM Texas rookie pitcher Phil Klein struggled in his first two major
league outings, giving up homers to the first batter he faced in both. In his
third appearance on Saturday night he finally got on track, pitching a perfect
seventh inning with one strikeout. TRAINERS ROOM Rangers: OF Mike Carp left in
the middle of the third inning with tightness in his left groin and is listed as
day to day. OF Alex Rios took a second straight game off after he re-aggravated
a sprained right ankle on Wednesday. Manager Ron Washington said Rios will start
on Sunday. LHP Derek Holland (left knee surgery) struck out four in three
scoreless innings in his third rehabilitation start at Double-A Frisco on
Saturday night. Holland hasnt played in the majors this season. Astros: 2B
Jose Altuve was out of the lineup Saturday after leaving Friday nights game with
discomfort in his neck. Altuve said that he is OK and that he expects to play on
Sunday. CF Dexter Fowler (back) made his second start of a rehabilitation
assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday night. Manager Bo Porter said
he expects Fowler to be activated next week, barring a setback. OF Alex Presley
(strained right side) took batting practice on the field on Saturday for the
first time since being put on the disabled list on July 8. "For the most part I
was pleased," Presley said after batting practice. "Just a little stiff, but
besides that nothing too major." UP NEXT Texas right-hander Nick Martinez looks
to snap a seven-game skid when he opposes Dallas Keuchel. Martinez, who hasnt
won since May 24, has gone 0-3 with a 7.29 ERA in his four starts since
returning from the disabled list. Keuchel has allowed one earned run or fewer in
each of his last three starts.

. Detroits powerful offence made that unnecessary. Scherzer allowed two hits and
struck out seven, and the Tigers backed their star right-hander with three early
homers in an 8-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night.

. Less than 24 hours after the Wolves lost at home to the Mavericks, 100-98, NBA
president of basketball operations Rod Thorn announced Tuesday that Kevin Love
was fouled on his right arm by Shawn Marion in the closing seconds and should
have been awarded two free throws.

. Rudy Gay made the tying basket in regulation and a 3-pointer in overtime that
gave Sacramento the lead for good, and Fredette scored a career-high 24 points
to help the Kings beat the Knicks 106-101 on Wednesday night.(SportsNetwork.com)
- The struggling Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping for a fresh start Wednesday when
they emerge from the NHLs All-Star break to visit the New Jersey Devils at
Prudential Center. The Maple Leafs limped into the break on a six-game losing
streak and dropped all six outings in regulation. Torontos offense has been shut
out three times during the slide and the club is 1-7-0 since head coach Randy
Carlyle was fired and replaced by Peter Horachek on an interim basis. If there
is a bright spot for the Leafs, who are 10 points out of a playoff spot in the
Eastern Conference, its that they managed to score three goals in their most
recent outing. The three markers came in last Wednesdays 4-3 loss in Ottawa and
the offensive output gives Toronto five total goals during this 0-6-0 slide.
Leafs forward Nazem Kadri is one guy who believes the team is heading in the
right direction despite the current win drought. There are signs of good things
here, Kadri told his teams web site on Tuesday. Obviously were getting losses
and it overshadows everything else that were doing. There are a lot of positives
and I feel like, despite the results, weve taken steps in the right direction.
With some help from Kadri, the Leafs were able to get themselves back in last
Wednesdays game after falling behind 3-0 to the Senators in the first period.
Kadri tallied a power-play goal early in the third period to make it a 3-2 game,
but Toronto was never able to even the score. Erik Karlsson potted the eventual
game-winner for Ottawa with 4:40 left in the third. James van Riemsdyk made it a
one-goal game for Toronto again with 1:23 remaining, but the score would remain
4-3. David Clarkson also scored for the Maple Leafs, while James Reimer gave up
all four goals on 26 shots in the loss. Toronto is just 1-9-0 in January and has
lost 14 of 17 dating back to the middle of December. The current six-game swoon
is the clubs longest losing streak since a 0-8-0 stretch from March 16-29 of
last season. The Devils, meanwhile, have seen bettter results since firing head
coach Peter DeBoer in December, going 5-5-1 since the coaching change.

Still, New Jersey finds itself five points in back of Toronto in the East and 15
points out of a playoff spot. New Jersey entered the break on a positive note,
completing a 2-1-0 road trip with a 5-2 win in San Jose on Jan. 19. The Devils
hope to carry some momentum from the successful swing back home, as they kick
off a five-game homestand tonight. Jacob Josefson scored a short-handed goal and
added an assist to help Jersey slam the Sharks last week. Cory Schneider made 34
saves for the win and Steve Bernier, Travis Zajac, Jordin Tootoo and Mike
Cammalleri all lit the lamp for the Devils. I thought everyone stepped up, said
Schneider. We played unselfishly, we played together. Devils forwards Jaromir
Jagr and Tuomo Ruutu missed all three games of the recent trip due to illness,
but both players were at practice on Tuesday and are expected to play tonight.
However, centerman Travis Zajac is questionable for Wednesday after missing
Tuesdays practice with an illness of his own. Schneider will get the start in
net tonight for the Devils and he boasts a 2-0-2 record and 1.93 goals against
average in four career games against Toronto. New Jerseys workhorse goalie
picked up a win in Toronto on Dec. 4 by stopping 29-of-32 shots in a 5-3
victory. With the Leafs also scheduled to play tomorrow night against visiting
Arizona, Reimer and Jonathan Bernier are likely to split starts over the next
two games. Reimer is 4-2-2 with a 2.35 GAA in his career versus New Jersey,
while Bernier is 2-2-0 with a 2.67 GAA in this matchup. The Devils have won two
in a row over Toronto and have earned a point in their last four outings (2-0-2)
against the Leafs. Jersey also halted a three-game home slide versus Toronto
with a 3-2 win at Prudential Center on March 23 of last season. Toronto has lost
seven straight on the road overall and is just 7-13-3 as the guest this season.
