First Phase of Karachi's Maglev/Subway System

The National Ma** Transit Authority of Pakistan awarded us a contract to construct and operate Karachi Ma** Transit Project after our successful bidding. We formed a consortium of international companies to design, plan and schedule the project. This consortium will operate this ma** transit facility for 30 years. A 14 km elevated light rail network with 14 stations and a bus feeder system will be constructed in the largest city of Pakistan and the commercial capital of the country. SNC-Lavalin, a Montreal based company is a partner of T.I.T.C. in this project. Estimated cost of the project is $ 550 million.

PC Hotel plans new 40-storey building

* Six-star hotel will have a helipad on rooftop



LAHORE, Pakistan: The Hashoo Group will build the city’s first 40-storey deluxe six-star Pearl Continental Hotel, with a proposed helipad on the rooftop, at a cost of $50 million within two years, announced Shamsuddin Ibrahim Hashwani on Monday at a press conference.

Mr Hashwani was accompanied by PC Lahore General Manager Haseeb Gardezi and the proposed building’s Canada-based Indian architect, Ramesh Khosla, at the conference.

Giving details of the new skyscraper, Ms Khosla said the new hotel would be built adjacent to the existing Pearl Continental Hotel building on The Mall. He said the new hotel would have 600 rooms. Combined with existing facilities, the hotel Pearl Continental would have a total of 1,100 rooms.

The 40-storey building has been planned after the district government’s decision to relax rules set for the height of a hotel building, he said. The current PC building is 110-foot high while the new tower will be 500-foot tall.

Mr Khosla said a five-storey car park, enough to accommodate 1,200 cars, would be built to cater to the needs of hotel guests. He said the hotel would also have separate swimming pools for men and women with modern gymnasium facilities.

The architect said construction would start by the end of this year and would be completed in 2006. “We will use the latest building techniques and would build the structure on columns to suit the soil of Lahore,” he said.

Mr Khosla, the chief designer, receives the Aga Khan Architectural Award in 1980. His family belongs to Lahore and moved to East Punjab after Partition. He specialises in hotel designing and also designed the Pearl Continental Hotel in Bhurban, the hotel’s new building in the city, its projects in Gwadar, Muzafarabad, Dubai and Tunis. $200m World Trade Centre Complex in Karachi

KARACHI : US investors, in a bid to boost business and image of Pakistan, plan to build a $200 million International Trade and Exposition Complex at Port Qasim.

The project is likely to be completed by December 2007, which, according to foreign investors, the first significant investment move after the President of the United States waived sanctions on Pakistan last February.

The mega project, which was originally designed by Mitsubishi Research Institute, Japan, and architectured by New Jersey Architects will be the largest private sector construction project to date in Pakistan and will encompa** a wide range of services based on the development philosophy of Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The project, which has been approved by the Board of Investment and CCOI, will enable Karachi to host big international congress and trade fairs, providing a platform for renewal of large-scale economic activity.

While bringing a new dimension to the Port Qasim itself, the Expo City Complex will house a convention centre for 3,000 guests, exhibition and business areas of 3 million sq feet, car park for 8,000 vehicles, a hotel/recreation centre and a large teleport.

The sources said the American investors had given the go ahead for the construction of the multi-million dollar Expo Complex at Port Qasim.

The US led international consortium approved the investment for developing the International Trade and Exposition Complex at Port Qasim in co-operation with a local group.

The investors’ consortium has expressed their delight at resumption of work on this project which was suspended in 1998 because of the economic sanctions imposed on Pakistan following nuclear devices’ tests.

The $200 million facility is being implemented as a member of the New York based World Trade Centre a**ociation and the World Teleport a**ociation in a joint venture with the Arfeen Group of Pakistan, which has holdings in a number of large businesses in the country.

The Group already has a reputation for pioneering investment in technology and innovative sectors of business and industry.

Mike Saltzman, a member of the team has said the project would change the face of business and will give a great boost to the image of Pakistan especially since the consortium partners are also active in implementing multi-billion dollar projects in South East Asia.
