Rita Moreno, Tiffany Haddish, Jennifer Garner and More on The Oscars Red Carpet
Hollywood is in the throes of a cultural sea change, spurred by reports of widespread sexual harassment and assault in the industry. It has already shaped
this year’s awards season, which began with celebrities donning all-black attire
for the Golden Globes red carpet as part of the #TimesUp movement. The symbolic
attired was more subdued at the Grammys a few weeks later, though several
celebrities wore white roses in support of #MeToo.
Tonight, we welcome you to the Academy Awards. While the show may gently avoid politics — “We want to make it as entertaining as possible,” a lead
producer recently told our Hollywood reporter — the red carpet is sure to be a
platform for celebrities’ social statements, through fashion choices and
otherwise. The host, Jimmy Kimmel, said that the #MeToo movement would be “a
part of the show.” It will be hard for him to avoid the subject of Harvey
Weinstein, the once powerful movie producer whose downfallspurred the current
reckoning.
But the Oscars is also a fashion showcase for glamorous designs and bold choices. Adam Rippon, the Olympic figure skater, showed up in a Moschino harness
and Tiffany Haddish wore a pattern gown that referenced her Eritrean roots. The
actress Rita Moreno, 86, walked the red carpet in the exact same dress she wore
to accept an Oscar for best actress in a supporting role for “West Side Story”
in 1962.
