Inspired by the 1996 Malta Boat Tragedy, this is the story of a family from a rural village in Punjab. Baljit (Abhishek Bachchan) decides to immigrate to a European country to earn a better living, much against the wishes of his family. He unknowingly falls into an illegal human trafficking trap with hundreds of other young men. A horrific journey and a boat mishap on the high seas, off the coast of Malta, leads to the death and disappearance of the illegal immigrants. Amidst severe red tapeism, families are left clueless about the whereabouts of their sons. Finally a distraught elder brother (Sanjay Dutt) sets out to unravel the truth and bring justice to the aggrieved families.
Umeed is the tragic story of the journey of hope. A journey of dreams, that turns into a nightmare. A journey of a man in search of his brother whose disappearance he won't accept. The movie will be shot in Malta and Punjab – Production rolls in 2005.
