VANCOUVER -- Shea Salinas scored in the 86th minute to give the Vancouver Whitecaps a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer on Saturday.

The Whitecap players mobbed Salinas, who earlier had missed on a good scoring chance. The win was just the fourth of the season for the Whitecaps, who are playing in their first MLS campaign. All Vancouvers victories have come at home. The loss snapped a five-game unbeaten string for the Dynamo. Houston also hasnt won a road game all season. Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon made a crucial save in the 73rd minute to keep his mates in the game. Cannon leaped high in the air to get his hand on a header from Houstons Brian Ching, deflecting the ball over the net. The Whitecaps improved their record to 4-13-9 but remain last in the Western Conference. Houston has a record of 8-8-11. They are 0-5-8 on the road. It was a physical game with plenty of collisions and hard tackles that left players sprawled on the grass. The officials let the teams play but had to listen to complaints from both sides. A crowd of 20,226 watched on a warm, sunny day at Empire Field. Prior to the match there was a moment of silence for Jack Layton, the NDP leader who died of cancer on Monday. The score was 0-0 after the first 45 minutes but the Whitecaps had several golden chances with midfielder Davide Chiumiento and striker Eric Hassli both threatening. Chiumiento, who moves like a water bug but has a stinging shot, had the crowd gasping in the eighth minute. Given a free kick from about 18 yards out, he fired a ball over the Houston wall that Hall managed to get a hand on. The loose ball hit the post, then bounced back onto the field. There was a mad scramble before the Dynamo were able to clear. Hassli, one of the Whitecaps designated players, showed his speed and power in the 32nd minute. He gained control of the ball deep in the Houston zone, dribbled around a defender, then boomed a shot that just curled wide of the corner of the net. The big Frenchman challenged again early in the second half. He made a pretty move in front of the Dynamo goal, shuffling the ball off his right foot, then banged a shot wide with his left. The Whitecaps wasted a chance in the dying seconds of the half. Forward Mustapha Jarju drove the ball toward the net, then feathered a pass into the centre of the field. A charging Salinas was looking at an open net but sent the ball over top of the goal. The frustrated midfielder hung his head in frustration. The Dynamo, dressed in their bright orange road uniforms, also had their chances. Early in the match midfielder Adam Moffat launched a rocket that banged off the crossbar. In the 13th minute midfielder Brad Davis made a nice move into the box, then took a shot that Cannon stopped with a diving save. Cannon had to look sharp again in the 25th minute. Davis took a shot that deflected off a teammate. Cannon, who was moving one way to stop the first shot, managed to reverse his motion to get a hand on the ball. The match got off to a rocky start when the recording of the U.S. national anthem stopped about midway through. The players and crowd shuffled nervously for several seconds of silence before the Canadian anthem suddenly began. The Whitecaps quickly issued an apology on Twitter, blaming technical difficulties. Vancouver will play its next two games on the road, Sept. 10 in New York and Sept. 17 at Los Angles. Moore added an assist on Brian Boyles empty-net score in the final seconds that sealed the victory and put the Flyers on the brink of elimination.
