Main Hoon Na -Sad Version-
Khoya Hai Paake Jisne Pyaar Main Hoon Na
Bechain Main Hoon, Bekarar Main Hoon Na
Koi To Ho Aisa Jisko Apna Kehsakoon
Koi To Ho Aisa Jiske Dil Mein Rehsakoon
Koi To Kehta Ek Baar Main Hoon Na
Khoya Hai Paake Jisne Pyaar Main Hoon Na
Bechain Main Hoon, Bekarar Main Hoon Na
Jo Bandhan Toote, Jo Apne Roothey
Paas Aajayein Phir Se Dooriyan
Ye Kyon Hota Hai, Ye Dil Rota Hai
Bebus Ho Jati Hai Ye Zabaan
Apne To Saare Is Kinare Reh Gaye
Apne To Saare Is Kinare Reh Gaye
Tanha Chala Jo Us Paar Main Hoon Na
Khoya Hai Paake Jisne Pyaar Main Hoon Na
Bechain Main Hoon, Bekarar Main Hoon Na
Jahan Bhi Mein Jaaoon, Jahan Bhi Mein Dekhoon
Saare Chehre Begaane Se Hain
Kabhi Koi Tha, Jo Mera Hee Tha
Ye Kisse Ab Afsaane Se Hain
Kal Zindagi Ne Khel Khele Thay Naye
Kuch Log Jeete Jeetke Sab Le Gaye
Hisse Mein Aayee Jiske Haar Main Hoon Na
Khoya Hai Paake Jisne Pyaar Main Hoon Na
Bechain Main Hoon, Bekarar Main Hoon Na

SRK have seen Main Hoon Na 18 times already
The invite to the music release of Main Hoon Na is very specific. The function is scheduled between 2 and 4 p.m. Aziz Mirza’s daughter is orchestrating the event and her creative flourishes are evident in the wooden benches and desks, the clusters of balloons and the roll of honours that lends not just a touch of carefree bonhomie to Taj’s formal ballroom, but also takes you back to school, literally. And that’s very much the intention because much of Farah Khan’s directorial debut is set in a college campus. The place is packed. Not surprising considering brand SRK has a way of pulling in the crowds. The man in question walks in just a quarter-of-an-hour before the chimes strike 4 and the curtains finally go up. Everyone from Bindu and Satish Shah to Suneil Shetty, Amrita Arora, Farah Khan and her chatty brother Sajid who’s hosting the ceremony, have their say before the mike is handed over to actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan. And he just takes over with his inimitable charm.
Excerpts:
From the promos one gets the impression that Main Hoon Naa, unlike Asoka and Chalte Chalte, is a typical Hindi masala movie.
Main Hoon Na is true-blue Hindi cinema. It is what Indian cinema is all about. It has romance, action, song, dance, youth, comedy, sex... or main hoon naa (Smiles).
In its treatment, music, your clothes and even the roll-of-the-credits song the film carries a strong impact of the ’70s. Comment.
Well, I grew up on the films of Bachchan sahab, Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra and Nasir Hussain. It was beautiful cinema. (Smiles) All those sweaters with big collars... everyone jiving to RD Burman’s special brand of music. And since I am playing a 31-year-old in Main Hoon Na it wouldn’t be wrong to presume that Ram Prasad Sharma was born and grew up in that swinging decade on a healthy dose of such movies. So when he has to sing and dance in college, that’s the pattern he reverts to.
Did Farah Khan’s directorial debut take you back to school, literally? Did it bring back memories of your carefree youth?
(With a naughty twinkle) You know I feel quite young even today. I sincerely believe that I am still a child at heart and when I am with my children, Aryan and Suhana, it’s all too easy to race back to those carefree days. But in a way Main Hoon Naa did take me back to school because a lot of characters remind me of my teachers. There’s the forgetful principal, played by Boman Irani... A teacher who spits while talking....The Hindi teacher who is loud and speaks Greek English. And the oh-so beautiful Chemistry ma’am who all the boys fall for and want to marry. And it’s just not me who has a treasure trove of memories associated with these people. They’re colourful characters a lot of you too must have encountered when growing up. That’s why I’m hoping the audience will find it as easy to connect with them as I did.
Even today, I feel quite young I am still a child at heart and when I am with my children, Aryan and Suhana, it’s all too easy to race back to those carefree days
What was it like working with veterans actors like Bindu and Satish Shah who you’d grown up watching?
It was a very humbling experience. Quite a revelation to see just how dedicated Binduji and Satishbhai were. Binduji was on the set by 7 am, dressed, rehearsing and dancing. Just watching her was a lesson for all of us. Both she and Satishbhai are still so excited about every shot. Their passion for work embodies what filmmaking is all about. And that is the reason they are still working. I hope at their age I will be working too... with as much energy and enthusiasm. And you know what was really wonderful about Main Hoon Naa? On one hand I was interacting with veterans like Binduji and Satishbhai and on the other playing around with kids like Amrita (Arora) and Zayed (Khan).
Both, Zayed and Amrita appear very charged up about the film.
Yes, they are very excited about Main Hoon Naa. Both are very hard working kids. (Smiles fondly) Zayed is like a little brother to me.
I believe he is playing your half-brother in the film?
That’s right. On one hand, the film is about the generation gap between parents and children and on the other about these two half-brothers who come together in a crisis to be friends and fight a common cause.
Main Hoon Naa also has Suniel Shetty and Sushmita Sen...
And I am very thankful to them. They were so keen to do something with Farah Khan that they even refused to accept money for this film. And they were more professional than me. They would always be on the set on time and wait for me. (Emotionally) I didn’t know Suniel very well before but now he’s a marvellous friends and one of the nicest co-stars I’ve worked with. He is so sweet, humble and happy. And when you like a person for so long it’s because of the kind of person he is.
Are you happy and satisfied with Farah Khan’s work in her first film as director?
I hope Farah is happy and satisfied with my work because she is definitely more talented than me. I love Main Hoon Naa. I’ve already seen it 18 times which is even more than Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. And what’s wonderful is that despite being a choreographer, Farah’s directorial debut is not just a musical. Main Hoon Naa is a comic-action-thriller. And let me add that she has not given it any special treatment.
The promos look very happy and happening?
That’s because Farah’s shot-taking pattern is so different. She sees a film from the point of view of not just a director but also a choreographer and a sensitive lady. That’s what make Main Hoon Naa a pacy and yet at the same time a very emotional film.
Your co-producer in the film is Ratan Jain who gave you your first break with Baazigar...
Yeah, and Ratanji was an ideal producer. He came with the finances and didn’t get too much into the creative (Grins).
You’ve gone back to T-Series too, the music company that had earlier marketed Chalte Chalte.
T-Series more than justified my trust in them with their promotion and the business they did with Chalte Chalte. So it was no hard deal going back to them.
FARAH KHAN
A step forward
Casting her dancing shoes aside for a while, Farah Khan has donned the director’s cap. A metamorphosis seems successful, at least that is what the promos of Main Hoon Na foretell. The film promises to be an entertaining musical. Over to Farah for more ...
“DANCING TO DIRECTION has been quite a major step. I have a lot more to do— - script and scenes, music, ‘overall look’, and of course, guiding the actors. Even choreographing involved giving instructions but since it was restricted to just the songs, I had to just keep in mind the director’s vision. Still, I think a film is a far easier job because I have a larger perspective of what is required. And I hope I will prove to be a better director than choreographer. In my eyes Main Hoon Na has really shaped up well. But I will leave it to the audience to decide.
SHAH RUKH KHAN AS A PRODUCER has completely spoiled me. I keep saying that if my dad had launched the film, this is how he would have treated me. Even when I wanted to be budget-conscious, Shah Rukh would make me spend. He said only the best would do for my debut film. So the best guys from London were hired for the SFX. The guns were imported. In return, I made sure that he never got wind of the small glitches and snags. I did not want to distract him from his performance. Full credit goes to the executive producers and other staff who were super-efficient, making sure everything went off smoothly.
WE HAD A BALL DURING SHOOTING. My levels of bossing around as a director varied (Laughs). All the yelling was restricted to the younger lot. I even slapped Zayed Khan once. But I must say that Amrita and he have come up with superlative performances. Then, of course, there were the stalwarts like Binduji and Satish Shah. I had full freedom to explore my vision even with such seniors around. They don’t come to work with ego hassles of any kind. And what can I say about Shah Rukh Khan! He had a parallel NSD going on, for the youngsters. It was a most enjoyable experience on the whole.
I AM LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH AN AMAZING STAR CAST in Main Hoon Na. Long ago, I had told Sushmita that if I made a film she would be a part of it and she had immediately agreed. Both of us have kept our promises. This is one of the best roles of her career. Infact, if Shah Rukh and Sushmita had not consented to be in the film, it may never have been made. They were my first and last choices. Okay, maybe Sushmita was not the biggest of stars when I signed her for Main Hoon Na, but wait until the film releases, she will be!
THE WHOLE FILM HAS A VERY ’70s FEEL, from the costumes to the music. The music is definitely commercial but at the same time it has a lot of depth. The songs will stay in your mind. I was a little fixated on the R.D Burman kind of sound because that is what I grew up on. And I have to say that Javed Akhtar and Anu Malik have come with their best. In fact, Javed uncle has not charged me a penny.
