Pak superstar goes unrecognised in Mumbai

Syed Firdaus Ashraf | March 16, 2004 15:14 IST

Pakistan actor Shaan is a superstar in his country. He is often called the Shah Rukh Khan of Pakistan. So he was in for a rude shock when he arrived in Mumbai for the FICCI Frames convention and discovered that no one recognised him.

"It is shocking that Indians have no idea about the Pakistani film industry," Riaz Malik, a well-known Pakistani distributor, said. "Indian journalists are asking every Pakistani delegate what they do in Pakistan. It's unbelievable!"

"I hope we will interact with each other more and understand our culture and films better in future," Shaan said.

Pak film industry needs India's help!

The actor made a lively speech, asking India and Pakistan to fight piracy, poverty and disease together so that both nations can prosper. "Forget our past," he said. "Think of future generations. The world is changing and enemies are becoming friends. So why can't we both become friends again? We were brothers and sisters of yesterday, so why can't we become the same for a better future?"

The Pakistan delegation was also unhappy that Indians do not quite appreciate their television shows and films. "The Indians have not accepted Pakistani films and dramas, unlike Pakistanis who have adopted Indian cinema," said Javed Sheikh, a Pakistani actor.

"Indian television stars, actors and actresses are very popular in Pakistan," Sheikh added. "When Urmila Matondkar went shopping in Pakistan, she was not charged a penny. No shopkeeper was willing to take money from her! But we have to introduce ourselves! Let's hope people recognise us when we come next!"

I cant even imagine this. Shaan would have definitely been so so so so shocked. He may have though of signing autographs in Mumbai. And it happened that people questioned his identity. This is pure shame.

Now the question arises. Should Pakistan open up its market for Bollywood Movies. If this happens, then actors like shaan and all will collapse and their career ruined. But it would be fr8 coz only the best talent of Pakistani Film Industry will survive and thats what we all want. We want the best not the weakest.

Mumbai, March 17: The trendy young thing, an anchor for a television channel, walks up to him and asks: “You are part of the Pakistan delegation, right?” He has no choice but to agree, but looks a little taken aback.

Shaan, Pakistan’s hottest male star, has been dubbed the Shah Rukh Khan of Pakistan from the moment he stepped into the country three days ago. Like him, Lollywood — Pakistan’s film industry named after Lahore where it is based — has also been cast as a pale shadow of its big brother, Bollywood.

But while the rest of the industry looks forward to learning lessons — or “exchanging knowledge and information”, as the catchphrase is — from Bollywood, Shaan would like to be regarded as himself, not as a comparison to someone.

It is something Shaan feels himself. “How would Shah Rukh feel if he went to the US and was called the Tom Cruise of Bollywood?”

Dressed in a knitted black kurta and beige trousers, the star of numerous hits like Daku, Pyar Pyar Mein, Mujhe Chaand Chahiye and Guns and Roses actually looks good enough to give King Khan a run for his money, at least with his chiselled features and gym-toned-twice-a-day body.

“He is the number one, number two and number three star in Pakistan,” says Jamshed Zafar, part of the 29-member Pakistani delegation that is attending Frames, the Ficci’s annual entertainment convention.

It is the first delegation from the Pakistani entertainment industry in 38 years.

But as Shaan flits about the venue, a sprawling suburban five-star in Mumbai, he is not spared a second glance, unless it is by reporters who have been briefed. “It feels funny,” says the star who plays the underdog and has a huge fan following of women (“not girls, no”), running his hand through his tousled hair and screwing up his fine eyes, as he tries to find a solo photograph of his taken at Frames.

At home in Lahore, he avoids going out too much, because he can’t take being mobbed all the time. As of now, he can’t even find a photograph that shows him clearly.

In Lahore, he is as busy as SRK, if not busier. Of the 60-odd films produced in Pakistan last year, the 33-year-old has worked in 38 films. The last Id week saw the release of four of Shaan’s films. The Id before that, six of his films were released.

He works eight shifts a day — leaves home at 12 noon, does four shifts, comes back home for a while in the evening, leaves for work again, does four shifts, and comes back home around 4.30 in the morning.

“I am losing a lot of money here,” he says, adding this is his first visit to India because he can hardly take time off from his schedule.

There is not too much similarity between Khan and Shaan, really. Perhaps, it is a mockery to call him the SRK of Pakistan, especially if one compares the prices they fetch.

While Shah Rukh is said to charge around Rs 3 crore for a film, Shaan may get much less than 10 lakh per film, says a member of the delegation who doesn’t want to be named.

“The industry is very small. So a star like Shaan has to work round the clock,” he says. “Sometimes, all the big stars will appear in the same film.”

What SRK is to Shaan, Bollywood is to Lollywood. While Bollywood spends about Rs 10-15 crore on an average film, with the big budget ones now routinely crossing the Rs 50-crore mark, Lollywood spends between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 1 crore on a film.

“You can imagine how much the stars get paid then, and often there are many of them packed into a film,” says the delegation member.

The industry has been reduced to this state over the years, mainly due to piracy, and that too of Indian films.

“We used to produce about 150 films a year in the seventies and eighties. There were about a 1,000 cinema halls in the country then,” says Zafar. “Now, there are only 250 theatres,” he adds. The remaining ones are in a pitiable state.

All these areas need work and most of the delegates, reverential towards the Indian industry, are gushing already.

“It was an eye-opener,” says Jawed Sheikh, a superstar of Pakistani films and television in the eighties, who has turned producer and is trying to introduce “international standards” in Pakistani cinema now. He produced Yeh Dil Aapka Hua in 2002, made with Rs 5 crore, a record budget for a Pakistani film.

He says there is a lot to learn from India. “Five years back, India was where we are now. We also have the talent, but not the technology,” says Sheikh. He will be here again this month to record songs for his next venture.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between two production houses across the border. Others could be on the anvil. Shaan, who also has his own production house, is looking forward to tying up with Shyam Shroff for a film.

Shaukat Zaman Khan, the chairman of the committee on film production and censor board of FPCCI, Ficci’s counterpart in Pakistan, is too glad to be here. He promises that the move is on to screen Indian films commercially in Pakistan, something he believes will open Lollywood’s eyes even more.

Shaan agrees. “Bade bhai ko har koi sunte hai (Everybody listens to the big brother),” he says. But he looks a little uncomfortable with the comparison, as he did with the one between him and Shah Rukh.

He adds that his trip — he is here till March 19 — has been very nice, but there were certain moments of discomfort. “On the whole, everyone has been very nice, but there were times, you know, they looked at you funnily?” He meant condescension, but wouldn’t say it.

I think everyone in Bombay would have easily Omar Sharief due to his performance at Zee Awards or for that matter his stature and brilliant acting Indias may have become his fans. But look at shaan the gujjar daakus film hero is not a worthy export from lollywood. He should have stayed in lahore and not gone to Mumbai to insult himself and face shock...

they don't know shaan right now, but if/when they see him act.....he'll carve out a place 4 himself, i think.

Shaan must have felt like an ordinary man than a superstar. Those who act too smart have to face the reality one day. He has been badmouthing Bollywood throughout his career. Now when he is 34, he feels its high time he be recognised as an actor. It would hv been a shocking and displeasing moment for Shaan when he noticed that no one recognized him.

Shaan..from Hero to Zeo...just in 1 day

how did he go from a hero 2 zero??? lol. just cause they don't know him in india, is that it?!

he's still the undisputed #1 king of lollywood - bar NONE. there's no doubting his talent. if he can showcase himself in bollywood, i guarantee he'll be a heavyweight among them. if not.....he'll still be the current king of pakistani cinema. so 2 call him a zero, just cause indian's don't know him?!?! common man.....

plus lets not 4get....srk once offered him a role in his movie. srk ain't a dummy. he knew what he was doing when he offered it 2 him....!!

NFAKFan, SRK offered Shaan a Role in a Bollywood Movie.

My dear friend this was a Rumour started by some pro shaan lollywood web site. Shahrukh does not even know who Shaan is, let alone offering him a role in his movie. And BTW, Shaan is not the best actor that Pakistan has. We have better actors but they dont get a chance due to Shaan and other top actors rapport and close friendship with the producers and directors. In lollywood, its all about relationship with the producers and Directors. Professionalism is non existent.

I wonder what shaan is doing in Bombay among Hindus, as he has worked in films about Anti Hindu and Hindu India bashing.

finally, Shaan realises where he stands. Its alla bout popularity. A pakistani delegation memeber even told media reporters that many pakistanis dont even know their lollywood stars.

I was surprised when none of the Indian News channel bothered to report about pakistani Superstar's ( ) presence.

On request to Saki is remove the huge pics that you post in ur sign off. I wonder what purposeit serves. No one cares to see those pics of Shahid Afridi. Huge pics causes forum to load slowly and weakens our interest in the board. Not every1 has a broadband connection. Specially when most of the people who visit this board are from SubContinent, where we have slow bandwidth.

Make ur positive contribution to this board. If u want us to see the pics u want us to show, then create a new topic and post all that u want. See how many clicks u get..

shaan is in india representing lollywood! sure he's made anti-india/hindu movies, but that doesn't make a difference. look at sunny deol and his dad.....i saw him at the zee cine awards calling pakistan his 'aunt' or something 2 that effect. lol. allah ki shaan hai na(no punn intended!!)....the deol family of all people is talkin' abt peace. LOL. so it works both ways. its all about peace, and both sides realize this now (hopefully).

i won't argue that shaan's isn't lookin to expand his fanbase (in india) cause he probably is - but there is nothing wrong with this. and i would bet the bank, he will win over millions over there, based on his talent and his image. in the unlikely event that he fails to do so, he'll always have a niche in lollywood, as its undisputed king!! connections or no connections, the man is DEFINATELY known and admired by throngs in pakistan.

the way i see it yaar...bottom line....as a pakistani and more importantly a lollywood fan, i'm more content with shaan representing us, than anyone else!!! if it just so happends that he's unknown in india....no big deal!!! his anonimity won't last 2 long, in my opinion....

very tru. we occasionally copy 2....but we can admit it.

But the problem is that bollywood copies lollywood and still they make it look better than lollywood. And If lolyy copies bolly, they make it miserable

Posted 20 Mar 2004

Charizmatic dont be carried away. We know where our stars stand in terms of popularity. Lets accept the fact that Indians do not appreciate Pakistani Movies and Dramas as told by Javed Shaikh and other members of Pakistani delegation.

I do not understand why Lollywood producers want to open the market for Bollywood in Pakistana and release lollywood films in India. I think Pakistani film industry will cease to exist if they open the markets to India.

Aur Allah kay khatir stop believing that Shahrukh offered Shaan the role in Asoka. I was on Indiatimes Celebrity chatroom in December when Shahrukh was chatting with his fans. I asked the same question to him and he bluntly refused this. He even does not know Who the hell is Shaan.

Anyways if u wanna believe in the rumours which i think is started by Shaan himself, then do so as there are no takers of ur rumours in bollywood.

Posted 20 Mar 2004

BTW Guys do u know that Yash Chopra has sold the distribution rights of all his movies to Sajjad Gull and his films will officially released in Pakistani theatres in December. I also believe that Yash Chopra's new movie will also be officially released in Pakistan in November or December.

We all look forward to watching SRK on the Big Screen! Cheers!

if shaan want to make it big in bollywood he has to improve himself a lots, as till now he has been doing only action role! and he should change his stereotype role, always looking angry, like ajay devgan (now he accept different roles) shaan also do that, shaan is (might be) the no 1 king of lollywood but thats nothing compared wid bollywood the same goes with Saima, she can be called the queen of lollywood by some idiots, but compared wid bollywood actresses she is nothing...so we shouldn't expect a lots from shaan..anyway wish him best of luck!

i agree shaan needs 2 tweek his role tho. in lollywood, gujjar roles are what people offered him, so he took them. i'm sure if he gets other kinds of roles, he'll take them too, especially in bollywood!

as the (indian) article in this topic describes him, he's fit and he has the look needed 2 succeed. its a matter of time b4 india knows what pakistan already does: that shaan's DA MAN!!

Indians are known for making overtures and lying to appease the pakistanis. Even if there are lovers of paki dramas, they may be in 0.1% (that too is an exaggeration), coz Ekta Kapoor Serials a,d other TV serials are hot in India and nbody wanna miss it. Keep shouting about our dramas, but it wonthelp.

I am not here to discuss it anymore, as i cannot change anyones mindset. Me and My family and friends love to watch Indian dramas and appreciate their practicality and beautifulness and the glaomour.

Shaan seems to have a lot of attitude problem. He knows that Bollywood is superior but faisl to recognise it. Here is an interview of shaan today i read on Instep section of Jang Newspaper:

http://jang.com.pk/thenews/mar2004-weekly/nos-21-03-2004/ins tep.htm

The News on Sunday: What is your opinion about the recently held Zee Cine Awards?

Shaan: To attend any award ceremony with Indians isn't a crime, but to consider them superior is humiliating for us.

TNS: Weren't you invited there?

Shaan: I was asked, but I didn't go. So far I have not touched the height of Nadeem, Muhammad Ali or Dilip Kumar. I only attend ceremonies to get my award. I'm not big enough to give them out yet.

TNS: Was the award ceremony according to your expectations?

Shaan: Not at all. The audience clearly noticed our so-called heroines' petty tactics to be prominent there. For what, just to stand with Indian actors. What Resham did do apart from showing off her dress and hairstyle? You tell me were Reema's hands not shivering when she was giving away the award. It's disgraceful to see Omar Sharif saying that our women demand a Salman Khan type body. And how dare Resham tell a big lie that she has appeared in almost 100 films? One may demand her to count those flicks. Artists are ambassadors of a country. What did we achieve by going to Dubai apart from disgrace? I am a nationalist and I am not hungry to go to India.

TNS: So you would not want to go to India.

Shaan: No, I will be going to India soon. The government has received an invitation from the Chamber of Commerce in India to send a Pakistani delegation to the FRAMES 2004 convention on entertainment, which is held every year. They have invited Pakistan to participate for the first time. I have prepared a twelve page speech to deliver there. One of the core points will be that I have come here as a Pakistani and my nation's interest is what concerns me. I will die with my recognition, passport and art as a Pakistani.

TNS: Would you want to be cast aside Shahrukh Khan in any film?

Shaan: I am not afraid of him at all. As an actor what is his calibre? I don't care but I do appreciate him since he is a good Indian. I have met more important people in my life than SRK. He is human being like us. But his attitude in Zee Cine Award was clearly based on bias. He satirised us. At least I am not like him charging nine million rupees to attend any marriage. Neither am I like Adnan Sami Khan who is afraid of identifying himself as Pakistani.

TNS: Are you in favour of co-production with India?

Shaan: Yes. If India is ready to sign me, I have no fear at all; but I will introduce myself there as Mohammad Shaan Shahid. We import potatoes, wheat, onions and a number of other items from India, so why not films? There should be open competition. After banning Indian films we have turned it into an issue, which it is not. If we had allowed the exhibition of Indian films in country then certainly we would have gained from their (expertise), new technique and knowledge as well. A number of technicians have benefited from Pune Academy. The problem is that we discourage knowledge at every stage. Consequently, we lag behind in a number of areas (of filmmaking).

TNS: Do you think Pakistan film industry can compete with the giant Indian industry?

Shaan: Naturally, there will be quality when we will have open competition. This is the only way our jahil producers and directors will step aside and pave the way for educated class. Till that I fear these people will continue producing sub-standard films. Secondly in the past we gave tougher and better challenges to India. Right now it is only possible if the government shows its interest in promoting art in the country otherwise one-day even Afghanistan will be better than us in film production.

TNS: Would you admit that while your father gave this industry his sweat and blood to promote art, you have actually spoilt his image by working in third rated films?

Shaan: Yes, I do. I assume you are hinting at my Punjabi films. First, let me make it clear that while one has the right to criticise or appreciate my work I believe that the majority likes my acting. Secondly in Pakistan there is no such tradition of facilitating artists, providing jobs, pension or shelter to them. So why can't we enjoy life like others?

TNS: This means that quality hardly matters to you. Why don't you yourself make a film since you have earned so much from the film industry?

Shaan: Quality does matter to me but a single soul cannot change the existing set up. Look, no any government made any contribution to Riaz Shahid's promotion, only his family did. But ultimately what happened to his creation Yeh Aman? It was chopped by the censor board and that eventually resulted in his death. Being the son of Riaz Shahid I have the courage to produce such type of dynamic films but being a father of a daughter I cannot risk my money and life.

TNS: Why can't a producer invest money in a good project?

Shaan: Our film industry wallahs are a bunch of opportunists. There is hardly anyone committed to the promotion of arts. This is the industry of jahils, who can only think about how they will earn their bread and butter the next day. There is no planning at all. That is why the industry is on the verge of death.

TNS: And you are the part of it.

Shaan: What I mean to say is that we have a corrupt and disorganised system here. Film is teamwork, not an individual task. I, alone, cannot change this scenario. It's the producer who is the ultimate authority here. If he is not ready to bring in fresh subjects then what can I, and the rest of the team do?

TNS: Perhaps you can start by refusing to be a part of Jagga and Badmash type films at least.

Shaan: You think that would bring about some change? No. Not at all! They would replace me with Moammar Rana, Saud or someone else. This drama is being staged since decades. First Akmal was brought in as hero who was made to stand up to the zalim jagirdar. After his death it was Sudhir. Sultan Rahi carried on the same legacy. Once he departed the same people put this burden on my shoulders. So this drama has been going on for decades now. I only joined it later. Nobody questions the censor board that charges so much money from the producers to pass vulgar songs and scenes.

TNS: Producers and directors complain that you interfere in their projects. Director Hasan Askari quit the film Loha due to your open interference in his work. How do you justify that?

Shaan: My only fault is that I object to using foul language on the sets. These people are such a breed that I leave my sobriety and intellect at home to deal with them. I know I am surrounded by a non-cultured and uneducated class. And just to set the record straight I was the producer of the film Loha and it is my right to guide the director when necessary. Hasan Askari didn't take it well and quit the film.

TNS: One wonders that on the one hand you are working in Urdu romantic films but on the other hand you are playing same devil's role in Punjabi flicks. Aren't you destroying your own image?

Shaan: If I would be in another country they would have given me an award for the variety of my work. Be it Humayun Gujjar, Teray Pyar Mein, Daku Rani and Sangam, my roles are different in all these films. If Wasim Akram was in any other country they would have erected a monument to pay tribute to his variety in bowling. But unfortunately our country and system has no such tradition of appreciation.

TNS: And what about your costumes in these films? Have you ever given it a thought?

Shaan: This subject comes later. The most important point is that what we have been creating here is filth. I, have pinpointed to producers several times that this is the same costume, which I have used in another film, asking them to change it. But nobody listened to me. There is a very strong mafia (in the industry) which has rendered me helpless and I am forced to resign before them. Our industry has only five to six directors Iqbal Kashmiri, Masood (aka Soodi) Butt, Sangeeta, Pervaiz Rana and Syed Noor. How will the change come when these people have stereotypical minds that can only produce formula films? The only solution is to encourage new writers. We spend one crore on a single production but are not ready to pay ten thousand rupees to the writer. It is pitiable that we have sidelined high profile writers like Rasheed Sajid and Pervaiz Kaleem.

TNS: How far have you succeeded as a director?

Shaan: I did manage to earn a reputation in this field but producers do not spare me. I have flatly refused them several times but they use tactics like sifarish and plead to have me in their films. They would have me in the film even if I promise to spare two hours to them. So how can quality be maintained? I am eager to join direction but these problems are there.

TNS: How would you define Lollywood?

Shaan: In outer form it might appear to be a roshniyun ka sheher but actually it's darkness that prevails here. You won't find people like Habib Jalib, Nazir ul Islam, S.Suleman, Sharif Nayyar anymore. You will find owners of gambling clubs and poultry farms who are slaves to women. These people are absolutely ignorant of filmmaking. Consequently everyone is in a compromising position here. We have been chasing Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi's gandassa for years now.

TNS: If you are so helpless then why did you pass derogatory remarks about Rauf Khalid, Asif Ali Pota and Faheem Burney (in a recent statement)? Don't you think they need to be encouraged because they belong to an educated class who can change the scenario?

Shaan: What I meant to say was that these people have downplayed Lollywood's technicians' work (on several occasions) but they themselves failed to achieve the success that they were so confident of getting. My humble advice for them was that it would have been better if they had hired the services of any experienced director. Film is a different medium from TV. These directors were overconfident so they failed.

Shaan says he did refused to go to the Zee Cine Awards. LOL!!!!!

What a big lier he is. I have been reading the Indian websites and came to know that Shaan was not even invited. Zee TV's Subash Chandra says "the invitation was sent to Pakistan's Reema, Resham, Meera, Javed Shaikh and Omar Sharief and pakistan's information minister"

Meera and the minister declined the invitation due to dates problem.

The invitation was sent because the artists of pakistan are known somewhat in India. Omar sharief is well known to some Indians, Reema offcourse went to Mumbai, Resham got known due to her greeting Urmila Matondkar and Javed Shaikh was also in Mumbai"

Wheer does Shaan come sinto picture here. He seems to be frustrated coz he was not invited at all. Thats why he called the awards a flop. Poor Shaan! Get a life!

Shaan also dismisses Shahrukh Khan to be just a ok actor. And Shaan insults all Pakistani actresses (spared Meera) and producers and Directors. He forgets that we works in the same industry and he is here due to them only.

Shaan thinks he is bigger than Shahrukh. LOL! Well Shaan! I think u came to know when u visited Mumbai last week and were not even recognised by anyone.

Thats what I call Sour Grapes Shaan! Keep Mourning
