Farah Khan's directorial debut has given Bollywood its first all-India hit this year. There's good news for this Shah Rukh Khan-starrer from overseas too. Main Hoon Naa is No 7 on the UK Top Ten charts, with its screen average of £7,860 ahead of £3,560 averaged by Kill Bill-2.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta pegs the first week collections of Main Hoon Naa at 90 per cent. "The distributor's share for the first week is around Rs 2.5 crore; the film is set to gain in strength," says Gullu Sethi, the Delhi-UP distributor of the film.
So what makes this Rs 23-crore film a hit? Trade circles point to "the action and masala components." For Farah, this "tribute to the Manmohan Desai era of cinema" has "something for everybody." Still, its popularity in small towns and states like UP, Bihar is seen to be a bonus. Nahta attributes this to "the film's action components."
But it's still too early to declare Main Hoon Naa as the film of the year. Lying in wait to challenge King Khan's blockbuster are Lakshya and Yash Chopra's upcoming biggie. Bollywood won't mind the competition though. After all, in box-office lingo, no other word sounds as sweet as 'hit'!
