Here’s what Pat Riley is not going to do this summer: quit.Everything else is on the table.
The Miami Heat president said Monday in his annual end-of-season assessment that no player on the team’s roster will be considered untouchable this
offseason – if the right deal presents itself Tramon Williams Jersey , that is – but quickly added the caveat that the franchise is not looking for a total revamp after going 44-38 in the regular
season and making the playoffs.
”Show me the right name, and I could be all-in on everything,” Riley said. ”You know me. But it’s got to be the right name … that doesn’t happen very
often. Our core guys, we would like to keep together, there’s no doubt. We would
like to keep them together and we’d like to add something to it, but that’s
going to be a challenge.”
He also was clear on his own future: The 73-year-old Riley, who has spent a half-century in the NBA as a player, coach and executive Patrick Mahomes II Jersey , isn’t going anywhere until managing general partner Micky Arison tells him it’s time to vacate the president’s office.
In other words, the Hall of Famer’s competitive fires are still burning.
”There’s always something that brings you back in,” Riley said. ”There’s something that sucks you back in. … I’m an active participant, and I’m going to
stay that way to the chagrin probably of some of you and probably people in the
organization.”
Riley held exit meetings with players Friday, three days after the Heat’s season ended in a five-game first-round ouster at the hands of the Philadelphia
76ers. He said he hasn’t yet broached the topic of retirement with Dwyane Wade,
for fear of planting that seed. He reiterated that the team wants to try to keep
Wayne Ellington, even with the Heat somewhat handcuffed right now by salary-cap
and luxury-tax challenges. Miami has $111 million already committed to the
as-of-now seven highest-paid players on its books for next season.
And in the case of Hassan Whiteside, the enigmatic Heat center who was a nonfactor in the playoffs and complained about how he was being utilized by
coach Erik Spoelstra Aaron Burbridge Jersey , Riley made it clear that he wasn’t happy with the entirety of the situation.
Whiteside dealt with injuries during the season and didn’t want to wear a knee brace that the Heat insisted upon, and Riley said that if Whiteside and
Spoelstra need an intervention to solve their relationship issues – if any –
he’ll handle it.
Riley also didn’t mince words, saying Whiteside needs to make changes.
”By the time we got to the playoffs I don’t think he was ready,” Riley said. ”He wasn’t ready. He wasn’t in great shape. He wasn’t fully conditioned for a
playoff battle mentally. He, and we, got our head handed to us. The disconnect
between he and Spo, that’s going to take a discussion between them and it’s
going to take thought on the part of coach and also Hassan.
”How will Hassan transform his thinking, 99 percent of it to get the kind of improvement that Spo wants so he can be effective? How can Spo transform his
thinking when it comes to offense and defense and minutes or whatever?”
That word – transform – was a theme of sorts for Riley’s meeting with reporters. He started with a 15-minute monologue on how change has been a
constant throughout his 23 seasons with the Heat Drew Kaser Jersey , how the team landed transformative superstars like Alonzo Mourning and Shaquille O’Neal in trades and Wade through the draft and LeBron
James and Chris Bosh in summertime deals.
Come July 1, the Heat will be active on those fronts again – noting that the fan base is clamoring for more.
”Well, we’ll give them more,” Riley said. ”We’ll try to give them more. That’s what I’ve been doing since I’ve been here. That’s what Micky has been
doing, trying to give you more if we can. But we’re not going to do anything
that isn’t smart. We will never do anything that’s really going to hurt the
franchise.”
NOTES: Before Riley spoke, the Heat said guard Tyler Johnson had surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. Johnson was hurt in the opening
seconds of Game 3 of the series against Philadelphia but finished the series. He
will be in a cast for six weeks. The Heat expect him to be ready to begin camp
in September.

The NFL has denied advertising space in the Super Bowl program for a veterans group that declined to alter language about standing for the national
anthem.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed Tuesday that American Veterans, or AMVETS , submitted an advertisement last week to the third-party publisher of
the game program with the message James Harrison Jersey , ”Please Stand.”
McCarthy said the league, which has editorial control over the content, asked AMVETS to consider other options for the message, such as ”Please Honor our
Veterans” or ”Please Stand for our Veterans.” The two organizations were unable
to agree on language in time to meet production deadlines.
Commissioner Roger Goodell was sent a letter dated Monday from AMVETS national commander Marion Polk to express the organization’s dismay over what it
called ”corporate censorship.”

The 26-year-old Swede was an All-Star for the second time in his career last season, finishing with 14 goals and 28 assists. Ekman-Larsson is second among
Arizona defensemen with 102 career goals and 290 points since being selected
with the sixth overall pick of the 2009 NHL draft.
”This is a very happy day for me and my family Bryan Witzmann Jersey ,” Ekman-Larsson said. ”I have always loved living and playing in Arizona and this is where I want to be. I signed with the Coyotes

The 30-year-old Grabner had 27 goals and nine assists in 80 games with the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils last season. The Austrian forward has
scored 20 or more goals four times in nine seasons, including 27 each of the
past two.
Grabner has 158 goals and 91 assists with five teams since being selected with the 14th overall pick of the 2006 draft by Vancouver.

beyond the duration of his current contract, which expires after the 2019
season.
Roethlisberger says he’s not thinking about that.

Panthers defensive end Mario Addison has spent his entire life shedding labels.
Now the former undrafted rookie from Troy who was waived by three other NFL teams appears on the verge of joining the upper echelon of the league's
defensive ends entering his eighth season.
The 30-year-old Addison has slowly but steadily worked his way up through the NFL ranks, going from being a special teams player early in his career to a
third-down pass rush specialist and finally to an every down defensive end last
season. Despite being undersized at 254 pounds, Addison started all 16 games for
the Panthers in 2017, registering 11 sacks and 44 tackles.
"He's been a guy that everybody had tried to knock for his whole career," Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly said. "Everyone has tried to put him in a box
and he keeps bursting out of the box that people try to put him in. And yet
nobody talks enough about what he has done."
All Addison has done is record 20 ? sacks over the last two seasons and taken a firm grasp on the team's starting right defensive end spot. Not bad for a kid
who was so lightly recruited in high school he wound up playing at Northeast
Community College in Booneville, Mississippi before earning a scholarship offer
from Troy.
Addison's NFL career didn't begin to blossom until he joined the Panthers late in the 2012 season.
He played mostly on special teams at first, but developed into a situational pass rusher and combined for 12 ? sacks in 2013 and 2014. The following year he
tallied 9 ? sacks, earning him a three-year Orlando Brown Jr. Jersey , $22.5 million contract from Carolina.
"I knew I had it me," Addison said. "I just had to show the coaches that I was able to play every down. Every year I grew and showed them that I am worthy
of playing every down. It has worked out for me."
The knock on Addison was that he wasn't big enough.
He regularly gives up 50-plus pounds and several inches to some of the league's gigantic left tackles.
But teammates and coaches say Addison has unusual strength and desire to get better that has taken him to another level.
"I think he's tough, he's physical and he's strong," Kuechly said. "His speed and his strength are a very rare combination. I mean, he has 20 ? sacks the last
two seasons. If you were to say that about another guy in the league, you would
be ranking him way higher, right?"
Eric Washington, the Panthers defensive line coach prior to being promoted to coordinator earlier this offseason, has been a huge influence on Addison.
Addison said Washington gave him the "tools" he needed to add to his skillset and showed him how to use them. Addison took it from there Jaleel Johnson Jersey , working day after day to perfect his craft not only as a rusher but as a run defender.
Washington talks of Addison like a proud parent, calling him one of the toughest players he's ever coached ??both physically and mentally ??and saying

Addison said his personal goal this season is to top 11 sacks.

I wake up and I'm driven ??I am driven to get better."

Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was hit in the face with a line drive during a charity softball game.
Matthews was pitching during Saturday's game when offensive lineman Lucas Patrick hit the ball directly into Matthews' face Mike Daniels Jersey , knocking him to the ground. Paul Guenther is installing a new defense for the Oakland Raiders with the most important part of the unit missing.
Star pass rusher Khalil Mack remains away from the Raiders in a contract dispute this offseason while Guenther works on rebuilding a defense that has
been one of the league's worst for more than a decade.
"He's going to have a lot of catching up to do," Guenther said Tuesday.
"We're going to have to have a plan for that for sure. I'm really concerned about the guys that are here now working. These guys have been busting their
tails every day. Coming in early. Meeting with the coaches. Being great in the
meeting rooms. Communicating on the field."
Mack Joey Bosa Jersey , the 2016 AP Defensive Player of the Year, is entering the last year of his rookie contract that pays him $13.85 million this year and is
seeking a long-term deal that will make him one of the most highly compensated
non-quarterbacks in the NFL.
Mack has missed the entire voluntary portion of the offseason and has not indicated whether he plans to report for next week's mandatory minicamp or risk
fines of more than $80,000.
Guenther's focus now is on the defenders who are at practice this offseason.
"I'm trying to get the guys that are here better," he said. "These guys have been busting their tails, trying to get better. Trying to make the team. There's
some guys out there that I really think have a lot of uncovered ability.
"We're trying to get it out of them to understand, 'Hey, you might not be a 60-snap-a-game guy. You might be a 15 snap-per-game guy, do the best job in your
role and how you can help us win.'"
Guenther was one of Jon Gruden's first hires after being brought back for a second stint as coach in Oakland back in January and immediately given a tough
task.
The Raiders defense has consistently been one of the league's worst the past 15 years under coordinators Chuck Bresnahan, Rob Ryan, John Marshall Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey , Jason Tarver, Ken Norton Jr. and John Pagano.
Oakland ranks last in the NFL in takeaways and points allowed in that span, second worst in yards allowed per game and third worst in sacks as the unit has
struggled consistently from the front seven to the secondary.
Guenther's defenses in Cincinnati have been some of the best in the league during his time as coordinator there.
"Paul Guenther's defense, it's very aggressive," new middle linebacker Derrick Johnson said.
"So many different looks. The onus is really on the linebackers to learn a lot of stuff. That's good for myself because I know a lot. It's putting a lot of
pressure on me to learn it quickly.
"Learn it well enough where I can put my own flavor in making plays on this defense. I'm having fun with it now. The last couple of days have been my best
days, running around. ... Once you can get it down really well, you'll look a
lot faster out there on the field. We all can run fast and jump high, but

there."
Last year was particularly bad when the Raiders became the first team to fail to intercept a pass for the first 10 games of the season and had just 14
takeaways all season.
To change that, the Raiders have made significant changes in personnel this offseason, bringing in Johnson to anchor the middle of the defense along with
new linebackers Tahir Whitehead and Emmanuel Lamur; drafted Maurice Hurst, P.J.
Hall and Arden Key to boost the pass rush; and signed defensive backs Rashaan
Melvin, Daryl Worley, Marcus Gilchrist and Leon Hall.
Oakland is also hoping to get a boost with healthy seasons from last year's top two picks, cornerback Gareon Conley and safety Obi Melifonwu, who were

wing to center amid injuries, but just about everyone agrees it’s much easier to
go the other way.
”There’s a real quick adjustment to going from center to the wing: figure out how to work the walls and find your point men,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said.

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs could have defenseman Nikita Zaitsev back in the lineup Wednesday in their game against the New York Islanders at the Air

PHILADELPHIA (AP) While the Philadelphia Flyers couldn’t prevent Patrik Laine from scoring his 40th goal Authentic Customized Giants Jerseys , they were able to stop everyone else and end their slide.
Claude Giroux and Andrew MacDonald scored in the second period and the Flyers overcame Laine’s milestone in a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday

Both teams had to make emergency recalls from the minors before the game.
The Jets played their second straight game without 51-point scorer Mark Scheifele (upper body). Defensemen Dmitry Kulikov and Toby Enstrom were also out
after being injured in Thursday’s 3-2 win at New Jersey.
Defenseman Tucker Poolman was called up.
The Flyers announced that defensemen Robert Hagg will miss two weeks and Johnny Oduya was out and day to day with upper body injuries, forcing defenseman
Travis Sanheim’s recall.
The Jets did little until Laine struck again. His 76th career goal moved him past Sidney Crosby and into a tie for third with Brian Bellows for the most
goals by a teenager in NHL history. He trails Jimmy Carson (92) and Dale
Hawerchuk (85).
Next up for Laine: a matchup with Ovechkin on Monday night.

Payton certainly was paying attention.

The 9-3 Saints will travel to Atlanta on Thursday night for a critical divisional test against the 7-5 Falcons — the first of two games against Atlanta
in three weeks — and the Saints have made the commitment to pound the run to
control the clock and remain efficient, allowing Drew Brees to throw when he
wants to rather than when he has to.
The backfield tandem of Mark Ingram II and Alvin Kamara has been virtually unstoppable this year, and the two backs accounted for 248 yards from scrimmage
in a 31-21 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz
Superdome.
Look for the Saints to try to establish the north-south running game again on Thursday night.

Thompson — no easy feat — to score standing up on the first series of the
game.

Saints. But starting left guard Andy Levitre has a partially torn triceps and
may not play.

What’s interesting is how that first game back on Oct. 5 set the stage for both
teams’ seasons to follow.
The Coyotes, in their first game under new coach Rick Tocchet, led 4-1 at the Honda Center following Christian Fischer’s goal at 13:50 of the second period,
only to give up four consecutive Ducks goals and lose 5-4, with Rickard Rakell
scoring the game-winning goal at 16:30 of the third period.
Arizona (29-40-12) went on to lose its next 10 games, going 0-10-1 to start the season, and never recovered despite a respectable second-half surge in which
it has gone 20-13-7 this calendar year. The Coyotes still haven’t reached the
postseason since 2011-12.

fall back to being a wild-card team.

Goaltender Antti Raanta proved to be a true No. 1 goalie once he was fully healthy — he is 21-16-6 with a shiny 2.24 goals-against average — and was
rewarded this week with a $12.75 million, three-year contract extension.
Reliable backup goalie Darcy Kuemper also is locked up for multiple seasons, giving the Coyotes strength at a position that was remarkably weak when Raanta
was hurt at the start of the season – contributing to the terrible start.
Clayton Keller, the 19-year-old center Youth Calvin Ridley Jersey , started strong with 11 goals in his first 16 games and is finishing strong, too, with five goals and 12 assists in his last
14 games – giving him 23 goals and 65 points for the season.
Center Derek Stepan (56 points) had a solid season in his first year with Arizona, especially from a leadership standpoint. Oliver Ekman-Larsson recovered
from a slow start to have a typical season for one of the Western Conference’s
best two-way defensemen.
Defenseman Kevin Connauton has scored 10 of his 11 goals since Feb. 1.
Still, the Coyotes’ 4-3 loss Thursday at Vancouver was another defeat that summed up their season, despite their 6-3-1 record in their last 10 games. They
led 3-1 in the third period, but didn’t get a shot off the entire period and
went on to lose in overtime on Daniel Sedin’s second goal of the game, set up by
brother Henrik in the soon-to-retire twins’ final game on home ice.
“I’m embarrassed for us we couldn’t get a shot on net Ronald Jones II Jersey Buccaneers ,” Tocchet said. “A couple of guys showed up, but that was about it.”
Now, for the sixth consecutive season, the Coyotes won’t show up in the playoffs. And, for a sixth consecutive season, the Ducks will. And the roots of
