Inzamam says 'Pak team in full form' for WC

JAMAICA: Pakistan will open its quest tomorrow against the Windies in the World Cup's opening game at Sabina Park and looking towards that clash, Inzamam said they will give their ultimate effort.

"Pakistan will try its best and, of course, it's not easy to defeat the West Indies in the West Indies," he told journalists at press conference of captains at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Rose Hall, St. James, yesterday morning.

Commenting on the way his responsibilities have changed since taking up the reins, the Pakistan captain noted additional responsibilities, saying "when I just started, I was a young player in 1992 and there weren't many responsibilities on me, but today I'm the captain and there's, of course, a lot more responsibilities.

"Today, I see that when I'm nearing the end of my cricketing career, I'd like to feel that my responsibility lies in the way that I try and win this Cup for Pakistan."

Cricket World Cup 2007 declared open

JAMAICA: West Indies legendary all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers officially declared open the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the wee hours on Monday at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium.

The hosts West Indies will face Pakistan at Sabina Park in Kingston in the opening match on Tuesday.

A colourful troupe of more than 2,000 singers, dancers and performers participated in the grand opening ceremony of the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

'West Indian Energy', a two-hour-45-minute show showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region, as boundaries will disappear with nine nations joining hands in an unprecedented effort to host the mega event.

Rupee, Shaggy and Fayann Lyons performed 'The Game of Love and Unity', the official song of the tournament. Machel Montano of Trinidad and Tobago added shine to the event and Jamaica's Sean Paul and St Vincent's international sang talent Kevin Lyttle.

Byron Lee, Third World, Arrow and Jimmy Cliff, besides David Rudder also joined them. South African reggae artiste Lucky Dube and The Duffy Brothers graced the occasion at the 25,000-strong stadium.

The vibrant programme was a collage of calypso, dancehall, mento, reggae, ska, soca and other musical genres.

South Africa, which held the event last time sent a troupe of drummers to perform during the programme.

The ceremony held two days before the first match of the seven-week event. That will see hosts West Indies facing Pakistan at Sabina Park in Kingston on Tuesday.

Altogether, 16 teams will play a total of 51 matches at grounds spread across nine different Caribbean nations, with the final in Barbados on April 28.

Among those attended the opening ceremony were President ICC Percy Sonn, presidents of cricket boards of the participating countries, dignitaries from across the world along with a galaxy of stars of Caribbean cricket.

All the participating teams marched through the stadium and lined up in the arena. Ricky Ponting led the defending champions, Australia while Graeme Smith spearheaded the current number one team, South Africa. India were led by Rahul Dravid, Pakistan by Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sri Lanka by Mahela Jayawardene and New Zealand by Stephen Fleming in the march past.

Other captains were Michael Vaughan (England), Habibul Basher (Bangladesh), Irvine Romaine (Bermuda), John Davison (Canada), Trent Johnston (Ireland), Stephen Tikolo (Kenya), Luuk van Troost (Netherlands), Craig Wright (Scotland) and Prosper Utseya (Zimbabwe).
