You're right Sall, but we can't control what people think. But I think men are most likely to have lustfull thoughts for a women dressed like Bipasha Basu than a women wearing less (or no) provacative clothing.

I think to a certain point it would natural to be attracted to a beautiful women, but unless she's dressed to attract attention, then the man should avert his gaze - and yes unless it's a brothal it's rude to stare at anyone.

Well a decent girl shouldn't be free mixing anyway. If she's so keen on presenting herself as an intelligent person she should be doing intelligent things (like getting a degree/working as a professional/ being a good mother etc) and then her actions would speak for intelligence themself.

Issue here is not free mixing or socializing. It is how someone is viwed (perception) based on the outlook. Modesty, defined and practised by the Prophet and his companions, earns women respect for that they are humans and not objects of pleasure for the lusty eyes of indecent men.

You're stereotyping all men. Not all men are nyphomaniacs, you do get decent men as well. Like I said attraction is natural, but pervting (if univited)is wrong and believe it or not, you can tell when a man is checking you out, snapping at him will embarrass him and he's not likely to do it again.

Islam only commands restrictions on hearts that are willing to accept it out of love and fear of Allah.

For every injunction in Quran, it either follows of followed by the word "taqwa" or its derviatives - meaning for those who fear Allah - having deep rooted Iman.

We claim to be believers but we look for reasons to get away from any restrictions of Islam. We are the best judges of Iman in our hearts. Allah knows what's in the heart.

Instead of looking at others and judging people, we'll be better off looking inwards and judging that.

Like Sall said, it's the man's responsibility to have respect and good manners towards women, regardless of what they are wearing.

And you're speaking of men as if they are these mindless nyphos who have no choice but to be 'charmed' by attractive women, like women not wearing hijab are these seductive beings or snakes - who must be hidden away to protect the good of society. Men have an equal obligation of looking the other way if a women is not wearing hijab.

Yes I do, because I know not all men are nyphomaniacs. Professional, mature (in menatality not necessarily age) and decent men would pay attention to the words coming out of a women's mouth.

Not as much as those who are with hijab. Allah SWT stated the reason in the Quran for why women should wear hijab, "O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks all over their bodies. That will be better, that they should be known, so as not to be annoyed" [33:59]

Its an understatement of a known fact of centuries.

I believe not many women know before steping out of home which men would lustfully look upon them and which would care less; I don't know about you!

I am sorry, you feel that way, but in reality it is for their own protection and sense of security.

I agree with you that men have equal responsibility to lower their gaze regardless of women wearing hijab or not.
But........I must reiterate: Women have twice the responsibility. I say this based on Quranic evidence. Allah SWT ordered both men and women to lower their gazes but ordered women ONLY to cover themselves with a cloak over their garments.

Bottom line: Just like all injunctions in the Quran, it is in people's own favor to follow commandments of Allah - in this life and in the hereafter. And if they ignored His commands, it will be of harm to them in this life and in the hereafter. Everybody have choice to take it or leave it but no one has the right to change Allah's words.

Yes no doubt that women should wear parda, and I take it it's also settled that man should lower their gazes I still think it's an equal responsibilty for both genders though.

Women should do all she can to reduce the amount of unwanted attention in public, be it dressing decently to not speaking too loudly. If men still see her with wrong intentions, then so what? She's done her part and the rest is up to God to punish where necessary.

When SD you say that women have a double responsibility to prevent themselves from being seen by men, it's true, because men are more likely to rape a women than a women to rape a man.

Islam takes the problem by its roots instead of treating the branches of it.

Allah swt says in the Quran: "Do not even draw close to indecency". Parda prevents desires for indecent behaviors. Rape is the end result (behavior) of minds and bodies where carnal desires are not leashed. Among many factor running up to this behavior include provocation of sexual desires. Such extreme desires result from exposures to viewing objects of desire in an attractive fashion.

Well it's a universal fact that Islam teaches the best way of life hence it is called a 'deen' a way to live and not just rituals to follow.

everybody looks at a thing from his/her point of view .. but as long as religion is concerned we have to be very carefull understanding it, coz things which we are understanding sometimes its the other way out .. we have to look and understand it from all aspects..

Its not from hadith but it is from the etiquettes of Arabs. When some one makes dua for you, you return it with at least the same. Supporting hadith (roughly translated)is that smiling to a brother (sister) is charity. Respond to to your brother (sister) in at least the same manner.

ahaan .. JazakAllah kharian is bascially from a hadit .. i thought "jazana wa eyya kum" is also from a hadit ...
