In fact, she had more to lose than anyone else, this being her debut film, but the former beauty queen says, “It’s not me to lose confidence so easily at the start of things.” And how does she feel when people refer to her as a pretty Barbie doll? “I don’t know what that implies, good or bad, but I had a passive role in the film, which I guess some have failed to notice. While doing an emotion-charged shot for Janasheen, Celina Baby was told to put in her all for the shot, most of the handymen cleared off the set, and the blowers switched on, not as in Marilyn Monroe, but to breeze through Celina’s hair. But director Feroz Khan had to call ‘Cut!” because he thought “something fell”. The blowers had blown off her false eyelashes, yunno!

Celina Jaitley will soon inspire you to pump up some iron. The ex-Miss India has been signed as the brand ambassadress by the Zafs Fitness Centre, a chain of gyms across the country. And joining her in the campaign will be model Upen Patel.

The campaign is being shot by Rakesh Shreshta and will be out in a couple of weeks.

The similarity between Bipasha Basu, Koena Mitra and Celina Jaitley doesn’t end with the fact that all these gorgeous women have made Calcutta proud in tinsel town. It goes back a step further and starts from the very first platform that introduced these three Bollywood bombshells to the glamour world.

Sananda Tilottama — the city’s only high-profile beauty pageant — has been known as a stepping stone for supermodels, Miss Indias and actresses over the years.

Currently in its 10th year (including two years of Sharad Sundari), the prestigious beauty hunt kick started at the ITC Sonar Bangla on Saturday afternoon.

The preliminary round of Godrej Sananda Tilottama 2005 saw 20 finalists being shortlisted from around 50 aspirants. The participants, initially handpicked from thousands of entries, faced a jury comprising actress Koneenica Banerjee, Rajatava Dutta, singer Siddhartha Ray, designer Sunipa Samaddar, beautician Bridgette Jones and RJ Jimmy Tangree.

With dreams in their eyes, the beauty brigade tried its best foot forward, with the girls facing a volley of questions, ranging from the serious to the funky. The usual responses — “I want to be an actress” and “I want a platform to do social service and hence I’m here” — were heard in abundance. But some witty questions posed by the judges drew unusual answers, too.

“If you are given a chance to be a make-up item, which one will you be?” or “Between Salman Khan and Brad Pitt, whom would you choose and why?” saw the participants racking their brains quite a bit.

While the answers had a big role in deciding the fate of the contestants, appearance, personality and presentation were among the other factors taken into consideration.

“Sananda Tilottama is not so much about beauty as it is about women’s empowerment. We give a lot of importance to inner beauty of the contestants and that’s what we try to chisel out through the grooming session for the finalists,” said editor of Sananda, Aparna Sen.


The 20 finalists will be groomed in various necessary aspects for the “complete woman” by an expert panel before they face the jury at the grand finale on April 29. From dressing, make-up and body-toning to diet and etiquette, the regime will concentrate on matters far beyond the physical.

“Though we will be able to crown only three winners, all 20 finalists undergoing the grooming session will emerge a Tilottama in their own right,” added Sen.

Sonali Saigal — the reigning Tilottama who was present on the occasion along with other crown holders Cheena Vyas, Grace Gomes and Priyanka Nandi — couldn’t agree more.

“All the girls who participate in Sananda Tilottama are like uncut diamonds. The grooming and exposure provided by this pageant bring out their true sparkle,” she smiled.

The grooming sessions will be followed by sub-contests that will select winners in various categories like Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Beautiful Skin and Miss Congeniality.

Sister act

Who would think that being a judge at a beauty pageant comes with a downside? Well, evidently there are hazards to even this seemingly uncontroversial job, as one-time beauty pageant winner Celina Jaitley discovered recently.

“I almost got attacked by the sister of one of the girls who made it to the top five in the Miss India contest,” the actress confided yesterday. Clearly displeased that her sister hadn’t made it to the top three, the overenthusiastic sibling apparently told Celina, “You think my sister wasn’t good enough to win? You think she wasn’t as good looking as you?”

“I was shocked,” Celina narrated, while two beauticians tended to her tips and toes at Bandra’s Nail Bar yesterday, “I told her I wasn’t responsible for her sister not winning, but I really didn’t know what else to say! I was dying to say: Somebody help me!”

Of course Celina knows how close sisters can be. She was, after all, confiding to a female cousin while the two ladies enjoyed their beautifying break…

back from the jaws of death after a road accident now promises a spice of life with plenty of sex in his new venture.

Director-producer Sanjay Gupta talks in this interview about his new film Musafir and its heroine Sameera Reddy, whom he calls "India's J Lo".

Do you feel your original energy level is back?

Totally, even better. The accident has been an eye-opener. I'm quite focussed on my work. I've come to believe in the old adage 'What doesn't break you only makes you stronger'. My faith in life and god has been reiterated. I want to start with a clean slate.

Your first post-accident production Plan looks interesting?

We've nearly completed that. We've been shooting round-the-clock. I let the director, Hriday Shetty, do his own thing. I've been through the experience of having the producer breathe down my neck constantly. And I wouldn't want any director to go through that.

Hriday has been my assistant for almost 10 years. I want talented young people like Hriday and Sanjay F Gupta to make films for my company. My namesake is keen to direct a film called Radio Rapchick for me.

Is that another gangster epic?

No, no! At one point Javed Akhtar had thrown a challenge at me. He wanted me to surprise him and myself by making a film without any crime. Radio Rapchick is about five couples and their relationships. It's my most contemporary film to date.

Your films are fiercely contemporary and violent.

Yes. But in Musafir , which I'm going to direct next, violence will be replaced by sex. We're doing some crazy pre-production right now.

But I've made up my mind to find time for myself. Sanjay Dutt and I are no longer that ambitious about our company (White Feathers). I'd rather produce only two films per year out of which one would be directed by me. After my accident I wanted to take a year off. But Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor got me back much sooner.

How big is Dutt's involvement in your company?

He's wholeheartedly there. Obviously he can't give all of himself. But yes, he'll be in all the films that I direct. I've reached a stage where I can't conceive a film without him. In Musafir I've cast him in an incredible role along with Sameera Reddy.

Why Sameera?

We did approach Priyanka Chopra, but she had certain reservations about the script. She was honest enough to admit the character's aggressive sexuality made her nervous. She wanted me to tone it down. But that would be defeating the plot's purpose.

It's really sad -- and this isn't a comment on Priyanka or any one actor --but hardly any actor wants to play against his image. Why are they so scared about what's mom or boyfriend going to think? Don't they know acting is make-believe?

So were your leading men in Musafir apprehensive about dropping their pants?

Anil Kapoor took me home for dinner and made me narrate the script in front of his wife so there'd be no misunderstanding later. Sanjay had the most reservations not just about his character but the entire project. He was thinking of what's best for me as a filmmaker.

Again, why Sameera Reddy?

I was looking at a lot of girls, including Celina Jaitley, who was highly recommended. I met her. I was about to meet Lara Dutta. I wanted a woman not a girl. In walked Sameera Reddy to audition for Plan .

I hadn't seen her debut film Maine Dil Tujhko Diya . In the promos she looked demure. But in real life she has an imposing personality. When she walks into a room she makes heads turn. She immediately grabbed my attention.

I used to laugh at directors who claimed they met an actor and the character immediately fell into place. It happened to me when I met Sameera. She's our own Jennifer Lopez.

So will Musafir be your first female-centric project?

I've never consciously made macho movies. So why should I now consciously do a woman's film. Yes, Musafir does have a woman at its centre. But as the script writes itself out let's see how woman-oriented it remains. Right now we're looking for a scriptwriter.

What do you mean?

Anurag Kashyap who was supposed to write Musafir upped and left for some strange reasons. I've moved on. I have Vineeta Coelho and Samir Malhotra to write Musafir . I've brought in another talented writer, Suparn Verma, to do the dialogues.

Is Musafir going to be a huge film?

We wanted to make a small film. We don't want to let the stars dictate the film's canvas. It's easy to get carried away. But I'm not in the race to prove I'm making a big movie.

Mr & Mrs Iyer was shot for Rs 20 million. What a brilliant movie. My friend Sujoy Ghosh shot Jhankar Beats for less than Rs 10 million and look what he has achieved. Of course Musafir has stars and they'll build their own expectations. But I won't succumb to the temptation of playing up my cast. I didn't in Kaante .

Surely directing Amitabh Bachchan ( in Kaante ) was special.

I wasn't swayed against the script although I was working with the legend. Of course, I'm human and there was more thought going into a shot with Bachchan than any other actor.

Will Musafir be the boldest Hindi film ever made?

I don't know. I don't want people to come for the film just because it's got amazing sex. I'm not going to make a film that audiences wouldn't identify with. At the same time I don't want to make a film that abides by conventional yardsticks of morality.

Too harsh a verdict?


We overheard one of the Amritraj brothers tell designer Rocky S at a party recently that he hasn’t been able to find a Bollywood actress who will really make the grade in Hollywood. “They’re all so accustomed to over-acting.”

Bit of a faux pas on this Mr Amritraj’s part, considering Celina Jaitley was listening in…

PS: Which Mr Amritraj? Forgive us, but it’s a tad difficult to tell Vijay and Ashok apart after way too much wine!

Food for friendship

It's quite a show of solidarity when restaurant owners attend launch parties for others in their business, mingle with their guests, help their publicity along by posing for photos and wish them well.

So it was good of Dino Morea and brother Nicolo (owners of Bandra’s trendy Crêpe Station) to pop in when Nitin and Kishore (now known for their immensely popular Seijo and the Soul Dish) reopened Pot Pourri on Tuesday night.

For all their good intentions though, Dino and Nico spent the better part of their time at ‘Pots’ dodging jokes about being there to check out the competition, someone even saying, “Don’t give them any recipes okay, the next thing you know, it will be on the Crêpe Station menu!”

All in jest of course.

There's another reason why Dino Morea made it a point to be at the re-launch of Pot Pourri. “When I first came to Bombay,” says the actor, “this was my favourite hangout. It is where I called people for meetings and where I took girls on dates…”

It may come as a surprise to many that Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitley have already made their Hollywood debut (though with just a fleeting appearance) and that too with the latest in the ´Pink Panther Series´ .

It so happened that the two actresses entered a designer store on New Yourk´s Fifth Avenue , clutching half a dozen bags and suddenly found themselves part of a crowd scene as singing superstar Beyonce Knowles and comedian Steve Martin were filming in the store and just as Lara and Celina walked in , everyone around was asked to freeze while the camera whirred .

That is how the two Bollywood girls inadvertently became a part of the crowd scene in the Hollywood flick .

Will Anees Bazmi pose a challenge to David Dhawan with his penchant for comedy?

Comedy seems to be the in-thing these days with subjects revolving around comedy becoming a hot bet in the market. No wonder Boney Kapoor's forthcoming film, NO ENTRY, directed by Anees Bazmi, is being eagerly awaited by the trade. A Nizam distributor, who recently caught a glimpse of the film, has been going ga-ga over the film ever since. "The film will have the audiences in splits with its perfect timing of comedy. It is hilarious to the core," says the distributor.

In the meantime, writer-director Anees Bazmi, is pleased with the excellent pre-release reports of the film. "It is the first time I am directing a comedy though 30 of the 50 films that I have written, have all been comedies. There was RADHESHYAM SITARAM, which was supposed to be my first comedy film as a director but the film never saw the light of the day.

As for NO ENTRY, the film is a laugh riot. The people in the trade who have seen it know better. I would call it the ultimate in comedy," Bazmi says.

David Dhawan will probably have to watch out for this one, considering that his distinction of being the numero uno in comedy, is likely to be challenged by none other than his once favorite writer.

POOJA GIVES DINO DANCING LESSONS



Dino Morea has been in the industry for almost five years now. But in all this time, he’s yet not learnt the nuances of fine dancing. That’s perhaps the reason why he silently complied to his new producer Pooja Bhatt’s wishes when she insisted on him getting dancing lessons before he started shooting for her next film. Apparently, the film has a dance theme and Pooja doesn’t want to take any chances. Poor Dino cannot even protest because he needs a hit very badly. And remember, the only big hit he has to his credit to date is a Bhatt film ‘Raaz’?

And while the entire cast and crew is wary of Suniel and his mischief, the Shetty asks the crew to watch out for Ajay, who is apparently the Lion King of pranks. Whatever said and done, this team is having one helluva ball. The film is scheduled to release this year itself and will mark Suniel’s debut as producer.

This time we were on location with the stars of ‘Khel’ (Suniel Shetty, Celina Jaitley and Ajay Jadeja, but minus Sunny Deol), shooting at the Canal Walk shopping mall in Cape Town, South Africa. As Suniel and Celina take a short break from shooting, Suniel is back to his pranks, dropping witty one-liners and teasing his co-stars. We caught the duo in the middle of a hilarious chit-chat.

But mind you, it’s all khel khel mein !

Suniel : “So Celina, the obvious question first: Tell me, how was it working with Fardeen?”
Celina : “Well, we know each other for a long time, so it was fun working and hanging around with him.”

Suniel : “Your on-screen chemistry looks great, but what about the off-screen chemistry?”
Celina : “We hit it off big-time as co-stars. That’s it.”

Suniel : “Yeah, the two of your look really really hot on-screen together...”
Celina : “On-screen we were two normal people made to look hot in front of the camera.”

Suniel : “Normal, meaning...?”
Celina : “Just hi, hello, bye types.”

Suniel : “You look hot in the bikini scene in ‘Janasheen’. Was it your idea, or was it Khan saab’s idea?”
Celina : “It was very much Khan saab’s idea. I chose the colour and style of the bikini with the expertise of my designer.”

Suniel : “Okay now tell me: How was it working with me? Now that’s a difficult one. Did my leg-pulling affect you?”
Celina : “It has been great working with you and this entire unit. Only, I’ve grown two inches taller.”

Suniel : “I believe you’re very fond of mussels, and that’s why you enjoy working with Sunny and me so much?”
Celina : “Ha ha ha! What do I say? Yes, I love mussels and muscular men, too!”
Suniel : “Salman, beware! Or should I say, Katrina, beware?”

Suniel: “ Between Sunny, Ajay Jadeja and me, your chemistry seems to be little extra with Ajay. Guess that’s why Ajay’s wife landed up at the shoot, huh?”
Celina: “Hey, I thought it was more with you, Suniel!”

Suniel: “ What you think is not important, what we see is important!”
Celina: “Oh...I think it’s simply the Jaitley connection.”

Suniel: “ So is it soutenly, or Jaitley?”
Celina: “It is souten ki saheli !”

Suniel: “ So that’s why Ajay’s wife has landed up here?”
Celina: “She’s there at all our shoots. C’mon Suniel, even your wife is here.”

Suniel: “ So either of the Jaitleys has to be around, eh?”
Celina : “I guess so.”
Suniel: “ Heard you wake up at 4am sharp everyday for your make-up?”
Celina: “Yes, actually by 3:45am.”

Suniel: “ (Laughing) So what time does Ajay give you a wake-up call?”
Celina: “C’mon, pleeeeeeease!”

Suniel: “ Okay, so what time does he leave?” (Laughing louder)
Celina: “What nonsense....ha...ha...ha!”

Suniel: “ Is it true that Ajay’s son calls you buaa? ”
Celina: “He does crawl up to me, but he doesn’t call me buaa”.

Suniel: “ Who? Ajay, or the child?”
Celina: “Suniel, stop it.”

Suniel: “Okay, I’ve heard all the women in South-Africa are going bare-feet?”
Celina: “Why? Bare-feet!?”

Suniel: “ You shopped all the shoes off the racks in Cape Town, didn’t you?”
Celina: “Yes, I’ve bought 11 pairs of boots and I've have been miserably spending all my money on more shoes. I already have 850 pairs of shoes stocked away at home. There’s no place in the house for me to live. My Dad’s already given me a warning: It’s either I or the shoes that can stay at home.”

Suniel: “ Is it true you like dogs a lot? You keep calling everyone ‘dog’ around here...”
Celina : “Well, it's just an expression of great love for my comrades.”

Suniel: “ Oh...That's why you keep calling Ajay ‘Dog’ every few minutes. Is that love, or is that love ?”
Celina : “I just said it is love for my comrades.”

Suniel: “ I've heard you’re playing the title role in a film?”
Celina: “Title role?”

Suniel: “ Yes, where you are the title?”
Celina: “What??”

Suniel: “ You are the title – ‘Idiot’?”
Celina: "Ha...ha...ha. That's not me. Zayed is playing the ‘Idiot’ out there.”

Suniel: “ Heard you’ve also registered ‘Stupid’ as part II and ‘Silly’ as part III?
Celina: "No it’s called just ‘Idiot’!"
Suniel: “ Oh...the first is ‘Idiot’, the sequel is ‘Just Idiot’, is it? Ha...ha...I had a store called ‘Just Kidding’ at one time."

Suniel: “ How was it working with the director, Deepak Shivdasani?”
Celina: “He's really a thinking director...”
Suniel: “ Does he shoot, or does he only think. Hey, I'm just kidding, I know he's great to work with; I've done four films with him that went on to become big hits.”

Suniel: “ How was it working with Khan saab? ”
Celina : “Who? SK, FK or ZK?”

Suniel: “ Hey, I was talking about the director of ‘Khel’, Yusuf Khan.”
Celina: “Oh Munna (Yusuf Khan), he's a real dog.”

Suniel: “ Munna says he's inspired by Raj Kapoor, who adores his actresses so much that he starts worshipping them...”
Celina: “Well, in this case the thought of worship happened too late in the day.”

Suniel: “ So what if it’s at the end of the film...as long as it continues way beyond that, right?”
Celina: “Okay Suniel, now you decide who you want me to have an affair with. Ajay, Yusuf....who else?”

Suniel: “ You tell me that. Who do you want to have an affair with?
Celina: “Maybe some Alec in Switzerland!”

Suniel : “All you see there are sheep and cows.”
Celina: “And Alec.”

Suniel: “ So in ‘Khel’, who plays what game with whom? You don't have to answer that, we don't need to reveal that now.
So just tell us about the off-field games for now...”
Celina: “All I know is that major game of cricket is being played with Suniel as the captain.”

Suniel: “ And Ajay and you are opening it, right?”
Celina: “I don't even know how to play the game!”

'Humse Dosti Karoge'winner announced!

star Gold's Humse Dosti Karoge contest has finally yielded a friend for beauties Kim Sharma, Celina Jaitley, Issha Kopikar and Amrita Arora. Jaspal Singh was announced the winner at an event at Powai, Mumbai.

The contest that's been going on for a month came to an end on Saturday with the announcement of the winner. The event was power packed with live performances by Kim, Celina, Issha, Amrita, Mahua, Anushka, Aasma, Navin Prabhakar and Devang Patel.

The event was hosted by Rakshanda Khan, Mallika of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Vinod Sharawat, who also hosts Bluff Master on Star One. Vinod made his appearances in Zayed Khan style (Main Hoon Na) and Salman style (Tere Naam).

But the best is yet to come. Jaspal Singh will take the pretty dames out for date, all at the same time on 8 April.

The event will be telecast on Star Gold on 1 April.
