What is Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis (ton-sil-lie-tiss) is an inflammation of the tonsils caused by an infection. In tonsillitis, the tonsils are enlarged, red, and often coated (either partly or entirely) by a substance that is yellow, gray, or white. Tonsillitis usually occurs as part of a pharyngitis (throat infection). Tonsilitis usually begins with sudden sore throat and painful swallowing.

Sometimes, tonsillitis reoccurs, and may cause difficulty breathing. If this occurs, your doctor may recommend taking them out. This procedure of removing tonsils from the throat is called a tonsillectomy.

What are Tonsils?

The tonsils are fleshy clusters of tissue that lie in bands on both sides of the back of the throat, above and behind the tongue. The tonsils' major function is to catch incoming germs before the germs cause infections in the throat, mouth, or sinuses. Tonsils contain infection-fighting cells and antibodies that stop the spread of the germs further into the body.

If the tonsils are taken out, the individual will not suffer from more infections than they did when they had their tonsils. There are other tissues in the body that will produce antibodies to fight infection.

What are the symptoms?

Each person with tonsillitis may not experience all of the symptoms. Some of the major symptoms are: a very sore throat, fever, redder-than-normal tonsils, chills, a yellow or white coating on the tonsils, a funny-sounding voice, swollen glands in the neck, and bad breath.

How is tonsillitis diagnosed?

Tonsillitis can be diagnosed by performing a rapid strep test, also called a throat culture. To perform the throat culture, the doctor will use a long cotton swab to swipe off some of the stuff on the surface of the back of your throat. The doctor will then test the "stuff" on the cotton swab. This test will determine whether you have tonsillitis and whether it is caused by a bacteria or a virus.

Is Tonsillitis Contagious?

Yes. Tonsillitis usually spreads from person to person by contact with the throat or nasal fluids of someone who is already infected.

Posted 26 Apr 2005

How Is Tonsillitis Treated?

Treatment for tonsillitis depends on whether it was caused by a virus or bacteria. If the tonsillitis was caused by strep bacteria (streptococci), the doctor will prescribe antibiotics. If the tonsillitis was caused by a virus, your body will fight off the infection on its own. However, medication can be prescribed to alleviate the symptoms.
How long does Tonsillitis Last?

If tonsillitis is caused by bacteria, with antibiotic treatment, the illness is usually cured within 1 week. However, it may take several weeks for the tonsils and swollen glands to return to normal size.

When tonsillitis is caused by viruses, the length of illness depends on which virus is involved. Usually, people are almost completely recovered within 1 week.

Tonsilitis

This type of inflammatory inconvenience cannot really be considered as an illness. It is a symptom of another physiological problem. In most cases a sore throat is due to a virus. Such cases are quite frequent in children because their only defense is their tonsils.
HOW IT FEELS
When you have been exposed to cold, when the roof of your mouth is ticklish, your throat irritated, with or without white dots, and you have trouble swallowing, you definitely have a throat infection.
MY ADVICE
Depending on the evolution of the illness and your throat's condition Homeopathy recommends the following remedies:
If you have just been exposed to cold and feel feverish and jittery, take Aconit 6C, because these symptoms may indicate the beginning of a throat infection.
If you definitely have this aliment, you are plagued by general fatigue with aches and pains all over, your throat is dark red and you can barely swallow. Take Phytolacca 6C.
The Kali Chlor Complex L.41 is efficient against the following symptoms: red and dry throat, difficulty in swallowing, fatigue, fever, and heavy perspiring.
If you have a pinkish throat and swollen lining that makes swallowing difficult and a swollen uvula with stinging pain, your symptoms may be calmed by taking L.43 Hydrargi Complex.
The L.39 Mercurius Complex is recommended against tonsilitis involving a brilliantly red throat with small white dots, a thickened and sensitive tongue, bad breath, and constant thirst.
If there is any risk of abscess or suppuration, 15 granules of Sulfur 6C should be taken once a day.
Most of these remedies should be taken 3 to 6 times a day, 10 drops at a time, diluted in water.

The banana constitutes almost a complete balanced diet in combination with milk.

Banana is known for promoting healthy digestion.

The banana is used as a dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and blandness. It is the only raw fruit which can be eaten without distress in chronic ulcer cases. It neutralizes the over-acidity of the gastric juices and reduces the irritation of the ulcer by coating the lining of the stomach.

Bananas are of great value both in constipation and diarrhea as they normalize colon functions in the large intestine to absorb large amounts of water for proper bowel moments. Their usefulness in constipation is due to their richness in pectin, which is water-absorbent and this gives them a bulk producing ability. They also possess the ability to change the bacteria in the intestines from the harmful type of bacilli to the beneficial acidophyllus bacilli.

Bananas are useful in the treatment of arthritis and gout.

Being high in iron content, bananas are beneficial in the treatment of anemia. They stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood

A diet consisting of bananas and skimmed milk is considered an effective remedy for weight reduction. In prescribed course of diet treatment, the daily diet is restricted to six bananas and four glasses of skimmed milk or buttermilk made from skimmed milk for a period of 10 to 15 days. Thereafter green vegetables may be introduced gradually, reducing the intake of bananas from six to four. This regimen or prescribed course of diet treatment can be continued till the desired results are achieved. Bananas are suitable for overweight people as they contain practically no sodium.

Cooked banana flower eaten with curd is considered an effective medicine for menstrual disorders like painful menstruation and excessive bleeding.

What is good in Tomatoes ?

Tomatoes are rich in calcium, potassium and phosphorus. Potassium content of tomatoes is very high.

They are rich in beta carotene which is very useful for the eyes.

They are also good source of vitamin C.

Redness of the tomatoes is due to a pigment lycopene and the phytochemicals carotenoids. Lycopene is an antioxidant that has ability to fight cancer. During the ripening stage the chlorophyll of the green tomatoes is converted to limonene and thus the tomatoes are turned red.

Tomatoes have more than 200 volatile compounds.

Tomatoes are low calorie fruit which provides adequate nutrients.

What is Green Tea and how is it made ?

The tea is a product of a plant known as C. sinensis, a native of Southeast Asia. The tea brewed from the dried leaves of this plant has been drunk in China since perhaps the 28th century BC. It was first brought to Europe by the Dutch in the early 17th century AD.
Leaf buds and young leaves are used in making tea, the age of the leaves determining the taste and name of the particular commercial variety. After picking, the leaves either are dried immediately and completely to produce green teas, or are partially dried and then allowed to ferment to produce various kinds of black teas. After being sorted, all grades of tea are packed in foil-lined chests to prevent the absorption of unpleasant odors or the loss of aroma during shipment. In China, tea is sometimes allowed to absorb the scent from various flowers particularly Jasmine.

Tea is an aromatic stimulant, containing various polyphenols, essential oils, and caffeine. The concentration of caffeine in tea ranges from 2.5 to 4.5 percent, in contrast to an average concentration of about 1.5 percent in coffee.

Green Tea, is abundantly grown in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas. This belt grows the best teas in the world.
Scientists from Japan Cancer Institute have been successful in identifying a substance in Green Tea called Catechins or Polyphenols, which act as strong antioxidants. They are in a position to clinically establish the old adage that "tea is a miraculous medicine for the mantainance of health". Catechins remain unchanged in Green Tea as leaves are merely steamed, rolled and dried as opposed to black tea which is fermented.

Green tea polyphenols applied to human skin prevent ultraviolet light-induced damage, according to a new study.

A study of over 3,400 adults in Saudi Arabia--a country of tea-lovers--found that those who drank more than 6 cups per day of the brown beverage had a more than 50% lower risk of coronary heart disease compared to tea abstainers, even after adjusting for other factors such as smoking, diet and obesity.

More Evidence on Green Tea

A new study by a team of Swedish researchers adds support to the growing body of evidence that green tea contains
compounds that fight cancer. Drs. Yihai Cao and Renhai Cao of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found green tea contains a compound called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which helps inhibit blood vessel growth. This could be useful in preventing
tumors from forming new blood vessels, which they need to survive. In a study on mice, the researchers also found animals fed green tea showed a 55-percent to 70-percent reduction in blood vessel development in the cornea of the eye, a finding that could prove helpful to diabetics
suffering from retinopathy, researchers say.
Other studies have shown EGCG blocked an enzyme needed for cancer cell growth and kept cells from becoming cancerous without harming surrounding healthy cells. The researchers point out heavy consumption of green tea may not be beneficial for women who are pregnant or for people
recovering from wounds, conditions that both require blood vessel development.

Green Tea Battles Arthritis

Antioxidants found in green tea may reduce the severity and even prevent symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, a new study suggests. The antioxidants, called polyphenols, appear to possess
more antioxidant potency than some vitamins. Researchers also point out there is anecdotal evidence suggesting that people living in India, China and Japan --
where green tea consumption is high -- have lower rates of rheumatoid arthritis.

Eat something before you exercise in the morning

Its always better to have some carbohydrate food in the morning before going in for exercise. The reason being that you always need some sugar in order to burn fat. As they say " Fat is burned in the flame of carbohydrate ". If sugar is too low, the body doesn't burn fat, rather it converts to protein burning. This is seen in marathon runners during the last five or six miles of their 26-mile race. They've used up their glycogen stores and their bodies start burning amino acids (protein). So if you happen to have low glycogen in the morning, you're more likely to burn valuable protein, which comes primarily from the breakdown of muscle tissue.

For this reason, it's a good idea to drink a little orange juice to elevate blood sugar before you exercise first thing in the morning.
